Savage 10TR le/military

I posted some pics before with my cheapy scope which has since been replaced with something a little more respectible so will probably snap a few in the next few days, just been way too hot outside.

To hot? Haha, I know what you mean, the a/c at the office broke down yesterday, and I would break out sweating buckets with every little movement. It was ugly.

I got a new camera last week and snapped some new photos of my rig, but every time I post, I feel like I’m spamming this thread with my rifle, haha! That’s why I’m hoping other people will post pictures of their rigs :)

Here. Let me make you feel better. :p

Haha, thanks! Are those Millet low rings? I ordered a set for my Red October (Millet LRS1). The ones that came with it are wayyyy to tall.

Alright then. Another question. What height rings should I be getting for mounting to the stock rail? I have an AD recon QD mount, not sure if it will be high enough though.

Edit. Just saw above post.

Did you get your glass yet? I also ordered an AD Recon (SL model) for a G2DMR that's coming in and I'm a bit worried it's too low. I did some math (and my math usually sucks) but I worked it out that it should just barely clear.

Another thing that's got me humming and hawing is whether or not I even want to take the Millet off at this point. The LRS has worked surprisingly well out to 300m, and I want to see if it's any good further out....just have to find that spot that condomboy found to reach out to almost 900m.

That bolt body is dead nutz ###y! After install does it require headspace checking or is it a drop in replacement?

Tested out the new bolt body this past weekend, action was nice and smooth, no problems or hiccups:

Went out to Furry Creek with 4 other guys and their TRs. Three of them were trying out their rifles for the first time.

Great review, thanks! Clearly written, easy to read and understand, great layout and fantastic photos.

You mentioned you didn't see many reviews with comprehensive testing. I found this one quite helpful when I was deciding whether or not I should buy one (right after my wife bought a 700P for my birthday, haha!):

Anyway, please update us with your findings! I tried a few different types of ammo including cheap Federal Blue Box, both 150 and 180 gr, some really cheap Winchester 180gr, that Serbian PPU, then of course the good stuff like Nosler, Hornady, SMK....mine seemed to like the match stuff a lot, but a buddy of mine's TR was happy with cheap Federal Blu Box....every rifle is different I guess.

My 10TR likes federal blue box 150gr so I lucked out. First time out with the rifle I shot a 1" group at just over 160m. When I go shooting with Mister Donut I set up my steel torso gong at 300m and have no problems keeping all my shots within the head (8"x8") area.
Despite grouping well with blue box, I didn't feel like I was maximizing the rifles potential so I started testing some hand loads to see how much precision I could squeeze out of it. Here are a few loads I tested a couple weeks ago at PCDHFC. All groups are 5 shots except for the upper right because I ran out of time. Also had a flyer in the middle upper and lower left groups. 100% my fault and I called it even before seeing the POI.

Turns out the first load I tested resulted in the best group of the day. 0.507" - 0.308" = 0.199" give or take a few thou.

I'm extremely happy with the performance so far. It is far superior to my piece of $hit Remington 700 that was double the price of the Savage. So far we've only had the gong out to 300m. I'm curious to see how it performs at 500m or more at our next outing.

For now it seems like 44.2 grains of Varget pushing 168gr Amax does the job. But I won't know for sure until I do some more fine tuning with the powder charge. When I tested my handloads for the first time I had a really tight group at 42 grains I didn't like how the other loads in that charge range grouped so I kept testing until I found this sweet spot. I'll probably hit another node somewhere in the mid 45 grain range but at that point it'll be difficult to seat the bullet while keeping 10 thou off the lands.

I haven't played with the seating depth of mine yet. Just finally got a powder charge worked out, my original load was 41gr, I could get around 0.5moa groups at a 100yards but then it fell apart at 300yards, found 42.5 would group the best at 300 and close to 0.5moa at a 100yards.

So, I have had my rifle for a bit but sitting in the safe. I have a few questions about this rifle.

1) Is there a way to clean the BCG? Can the firing pin come out easy to clean everything?
2) Should i clean the barrel after every shot to break it in?
3) Anyone know where i can find sweet 10 round mags?
4) Any help on glass? I new to this precision shooting

1) Yes, you can clean your bolt, read the owners manual
2) It's your preference, if you break in or not, after you get shooting, only clean as needed
3) They are out there, mostly back ordered and priced high, I can't see the benefit
4) Spend as much as can, You can't go wrong with good glass... S&B, NF, higher end Vortex, Zeiss, lots of options just need to find what magnification you want and how much you want to spend.

Enjoy!

I just received my 10TR a few days ago. Shot it for the first time with factory ammo last week-end. I was surprised with the accuracy (quite good) for a first shooting session. I put a Sightron 8X32X56 on it. I am thinking of changing the stock in a few months but am not sure yet.

Well I finally purchased a scope for my 10TR and am starting to load up the rifle for some range time. I purchased a Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP Riflescope. Can anyone recommend a set of rings for mounting this scope? Will I need to install a cheek rest on the stock? What type of bipod should I purchase?
I am thinking of taking one of Barney's precision courses once I get the rifle sighted in. I am completely new to the world of precision shooting.

Vortex rings for a vortex scope? I dunno, soooo many choices for rings, then there are the one-piece units, really depends on your budget. Hard to say if you'll need a cheek rest, something you'll have to figure out once you get your scope mounted. Bipod....well, there are inexpensive ones like the Champion ones that have a pivot feature for about $60 from Cambodian Tire, all the way up to those $300 units from I don't even know the name....not Atlas, that other brand. Anyway, that all depends on budget and personal preferance.

I went with the Vortex precision rings for my PST. Not the QD version, but I won't be pulling then off to use irons....;)
