Savage 10TR vs Rem 700

What do you guys think would be a fair asking price for the 700 minus the optic?

This particular Savage action is not the best one. It has too much material removed from the ejection port. That allows the receiver to flex more than the Savage FTR model.

As for shooter safety, the Savage is hands down the better of the two. Guys often don't realize until they really examine them side by side. The Savage has a rotating ring just behind the bolt lugs that is there to plug the lugway and prevent pressure from travelling rearward in the event of a case rupture. I've seen this happen. In addition the back of the bolt is also designed to prevent the rearward flow of gas. When you look at the bolt, it completely covers the back of the action. Any over pressure that gets that far would be send to the left or right, not back into the shooters face like a Remmy.

Another advantage of the Savage is that you can change the barrel without a gunschmitt. You just order a new one from Savage and tighten that lock nut in front of the receiver when the headspace is right - if you have a headspace gage.

I'm still new into the whole precision shooting scene. I recently acquired a Remington 700LA .308 with a police barrel in a McMillan A5 stock. I also have a Savage 10TR. Only aftermarket parts are a cheek riser and ATRS muzzle brake. I took the 700 in on a trade with the idea of shooting it and comparing it to my 10TR and selling the loser. Honestly I'm a little bit unsure which would be the better choice. I've had the 10TR out maybe 5 or 6 times now, the 700 was out for the first time today. They both seem to shoot about the same, sub MOA as long as I do my part. So here's my personal pros and cons.

Savage 10TR

PROS
- I like the accutrigger
- threaded muzzle
- larger bolt handle
- 5R rifling if that matters

CONS
- not a big fan of the accustock
- bolt is a little sloppy
- not as much aftermarket support

Remington 700

PROS
- really like the McMillan stock
- larger aftermarket support

CONS
- bolt handle somewhat small to manipulate
- muzzle not threaded
- trigger is crisp but heavy

So what would you guys do? Like I said the plan is to sell one then dump that money into the winner.

Nothing wrong with the standard savage action as the base for a precision rifle. I shoot FTR with one and do just fine.

Op, maybe break the 700 up. The stock's got to be worth 850 and the barrelled action would depend on what it started life as I guess. Is it older rifle? I think the older 700's are more desireable.

The 700 is from 2006. It started life as a 700 in 30-06, so it's the long action. It then had a 700P 26" barrel installed on it, reamed the chamber(tight),and barrel re crowned. Also had a 20moa rail installed.

Im a bit of a Savage fan-boy, and biased against Remington. With the amount of recalls Remington has done recently, and how they turned Marlin from a good company into garbage... I cant justify even trying them (rifles). The 870 is a great shotgun, and tried, tested and true. The same *used* to be able to be said for the 700.
I think somewhere along the lines, they lost touch with quality and put out too much quantity.

Savage has never done me wrong. Picking up any one of their guns (axis, 11/16, 10TR, etc) and going out to the range... Ive been blown away at the accuracy out of the box. Their stocks arent the greatest, and I dont mind that because I've upgraded to the Tac21 now. But the 10TR performs and my vote goes to it.

It seems to be savage is the slight favourite here. I'm leaning more that way myself, it's the stock on the 700 that is making this hard. I've sent out a couple emails about availability for a mcmillan or manners stock for the savage, so see where that goes. Or maybe I should just sell em both and get a Savage model 12 in 6.5 creedmoore

Any savage with an actual fibreglass stock or laminate stock will work well. Stay away from the ones with the plastic. None of those stocks are any good no matter the configuration. Bell and Carlson make a nice savage stock and are very reasonable price wise.

The savage palma with the adjustable stock is in my opinion the nicest savage ever made. Still hit and miss with a factory barrel though (no pun intended) so even with that a barrel upgrade is likely needed.

Humm, didn't know the 700 was a bit of a Frankenstein. Split the rifle up and sell it as parts ie. Sell off the action, barrel and stock separately. You'd probably get about $650 -$750 for the stock. Maybe a bit more if the stock is mint.

Buy a new stock for the 10TR or sell it and put all that $ towards a higher end rifle.

Which model 700 are you comparing to the 10TR? 700 is a pretty broad spectrum. I guess the closest in terms of specs is probably the 700P or the 700 5R Milspec? Except the stocks and the feel of the 700's actions are worlds apart from the 10TR, so I dunno, does someone else have an opinion on this? I remember it was discussed to death when the 10TR first came out.

I still have both the 10TR and a 700, but I've had my 10TR out more. I've had my 10TR out to 625m reliably, beyond that, it got a little weird, but there's a guy on here who's had his out to 953m

I think I'm going to try to spend more time with my 700 this year and figure out what she likes to eat. She was good out to 300m but got weird beyond that. I've been shooting factory ammo, but I guess I should probably get into reloading.

I wasn't a fan of the way the Accustock felt (at least the one that came with my 10TR). It worked just fine, just didn't like the way it felt or looked so I switched to something else within a week. Had a bit of that bolt slop that everyone's talking about. PTG bolt body sorted that out for me, feels way better, wasn't hard to install either.

My first 700 was the Police model which came with the HS Precision stock. I guess it was my only comparison against my 10TR's Accustock, and the HS Precision stock just felt so much better. That being said, I don't have that rifle any more. The 700 I have now:

As much as I'm a big fan of the 10TR, I think Remington might win this one just because there are just so many out there.

Where did you get the bolt body for your TR from?

Regarding the heavy trigger on the Remington, that should not be a big issue to fix. You (or a gunsmith) should be able to adjust it below 4 pounds. If still not happy install a Timney.
