Hey guys,
I won a cheaper savage 11 (like the 2010 model thats actually blued, with a metal mag/mag release) and after about a year of having it in my safe I finally went to the range this morning to sight in. It shoots nice, but it doesn't eject shells.

The "plunger" that should keep pressure on the shell to eject is stuck down in the bolt face. Almost like the spring is either MIA or pooched. Ive watched countless Youtube videos on how to remove by punching that pin out of the bolt head, but I cannot get this pin out to remove extractor and check spring. Some guys have said you need to put slight pressure on it but in my case seeing as its in the bolt head I can't do that. Anyone have any suggestions on how to remove it short of ordering a new bolt face with ejector already installed and changing it out? Obviously by doing that, id have to check headspace after which I guess isn't the end of the world but id have to order go/no-go gauges.

Ill attach photos to this post so you can see what i'm talking about. Ive also found the "claw" extractor on the side is missing the ball between it and the spring, I feel like someone either fired a real hot round of it or they had no clue what they were doing tinkered with this and royally messed it up, or maybe both. I guess the bright side is the rifle cost me $20 but still kind of annoying....

With the bolt face pointing upwards, preferable in a vise, add a drop of penetrating oil or solvent to the ejector hole. With a punch and small hammer lightly tap the ejector, tap not hit. The repetitive taps will cause a vibration and get the oil/solvent to start working into the parts. The ejector should free but it may take awhile.

Once the ejector is free then continue with normal disassembly and clean all parts, including the hole.

I did put a drop of penetrating oil in there and letting it soak in a bit and will try that to free it up. Thanks

You can carefully drive out the pin holding the ejector out( some people do it in a plastic bag) , and clean things up, then reinstall.
That usually works for the Savages I have worked on . Quite often the spring gets jammed up with crud.

While my initial opinion was to offer the thought that perhaps someone removed the spring so that after firing the PO would not have to search high & low for the spent brass, however, after looking at the gas cutting around where the primer would be on the bolt face as well as the pitting on it, I'd venture a guess that someone worked up MAX! loads in the winter & then fired those same loads in 35+ C temperatures in the heat of the summer, likely after the rounds had baked in the sun for a spell.

I cant get that pin out to release the ejector. I think its due to the fact that ejector is so far down in the bolt face. Ive got some penetrating oil soaking in there and hopefully it frees things up. I can order a new bolt face with ejector and everything in it turn key from Kinney Shooting Supplies in the states, they allegedly will ship to Canada, but ill call Monday to confirm. The bolt head itself is $80 USD plus shipping/duty/tariffs etc so i'm sure it'll be $200 CAD by the time I get it here. Idk if its worth it or just use it as is. Its strictly a coyote/truck rifle so I could just run it as is and flick the empty out by hand too. Just annoying thats all lol

It almost looks like your ejector is a part of one, not a whole one, broken off. Hard to see from the pic. Your extractor definitely needs the detent ball to function correctly. The pin holding the ejector in place will come out with proper tools. Broken many a small pin punch. Use a starter punch to get it moving.

Have you tried punching the pin out both ways? I haven't taken apart a Savage bolt in years but I recall the pins are tapered.

The other option is drill the pin out. The bolt parts (spring and pin) are far cheaper than a replacement bolt head.
I have tried both ways with 0 luck unfortunately. Cause I’d definitely rather order the ejector parts vs a whole bolt head for sure.

I’m actually starting to wonder that too that it’s broken off. I actually had a brainwave last night, I took a piece of shot from a #4 12ga shell and used it as the ball for the extractor, fit perfectly, but just gotta get this pin/ejector out and then we’re styling. I may dry to drill it out, I mean at this point it’s already “wrecked” so I’ll maybe try that

I was able to drill out the pin holding the ejector. But ejector still wont pop out, and I see 0 remains of a spring in there at all. Ill put some more oil in there and let it soak and see if it slides out tomorrow.

The retaining pin is like a pin on a grenade, and now you've pulled the pin. When the ejector becomes free it will launch. Better wrap the bolt in a rag or use a substitute pin till spring tension is released.
