Was with a friend today looking at 300s. He wants to be able to take moose out to about 400 or so yards. Any thoughts on the Savage or the calibre choice other than upgrading the scope to something a bit bigger?

Both will work for what you want.

Don't know what else to say except "Moose at 400 yards!?!" Not very often does that present itself.

Where he has been hunting outside Sudbury is hilly and this year he had to pass on shots with his old 303 because of the distances and is looking for something with more reach.he uses a rangefinder and said many were out past 300 yds across ponds and between hills. He doesn't want to pass up such chances next year.

Just remember...if you drop a donkey on the far side of a pond, ravine or bog you still have to drag the big bugger all the way back. There's something to be said for flattening them close to the road or trail.

I agree and told him not to call me to help drag it out LOL

I took some advice a fellow in the Yukon once after pointing at a tree line and stating that I could hit a moose there. It was some 350-400yds away, but over some very marshy ground. The fellow clearly stated "If you shoot a moose over there, you will have to pack it out yourself."

I took heed.
