Just curious, is the Savage action better than the Rem 700 action?

What reasons are one preferred , over the other.

Just curious about the SA.

And I've seen rem actions for sale, but never seen any Savage actions, for sale.

Why is that.

How about this?

Savage
Pro: changeable bolt heads
Con: its a Savage

Remington
Pro: tremendous aftermarket support
Con: its a Remington

Welll other than those two pros. Neither of which I'm concerned with.
That's it?

Why can't you find a Savage action for sale?

The reason I ask is, I'm looking at buying a barrel, but it's only available in a savage prefit.
So I need a Savage action, but can't find a dealer for actions only.

There are three on the EE right now.

That's bizarre. What cartridge are you looking at that is only available in a Savage prefit?

Why can't you get a blank and have a smith thread and chamber it?

Sorry, didn't mean to say,I need a Savage action.
Just curious,as why you can't buy a Savage action.

The reason for a prefit is,Proof CFW only makes a Savage prefit and I can get a prefit done locally.

Most of my friend's have 700s, but they personally prefer the older 700 actins as opposed to the newer ones for some reason.

Five years ago I decided on a Savage platform as I wanted a .223 bolt action with specific requirements.

1. US made for parts and support.
2. Threaded heavier barrel.
3. Metal backup sights, and QD scope rings.
4. Oversized bolt handle.
5. Aftermarket support.
6. Adjustable trigger.

Settled on a .223 Hog Hunter that at the time was only 469.00 CDN.

I could not find a 700 new for that price, so Savage it was.

After countless rounds it started having shell ejection problems. I bought an upgraded ejector/extractor kit for 35.00, and swapped out the pieces easily, and the brass just flys out now. Also bought a Accustock for 50.00, and DBM for 100.00 magazine included. Barrel and bolt changes are real easy with Savages.

So my point is, the Savage has excellent support groups, numerous parts and options, but the 700 has more. My 700 buddys for some reason snub my Savage, but it keeps up just fine.

Either platform is great, but the 700 is tried and true, and will always be more accepted, even if a Savage shoots as well.

My options are ,Proof CFW Savage prefit or Christensom Arms CFW, Rem 700 prefit.

I guess either will be sufficient, for me.

CA is cheaper.

If I was going the savage route, I would grab a sa model 12 stainless and sell the barrel. It was the beefiest savage action I've owned and nice dual ports.
That said, I prefer the rem 700 action due to (already mentioned and you already know) the aftermarket is so huge it offers many options.
Some savage rifles have been the most accurate rifles I've owned but I just can't warm up to them.. the mk11 aside.

Ummm, tikka? Lol. Rem 700's have to be trued on the rebarrel. Floating bolt heads on savage don't need to be trued. Although the savage stealth actions are advertised as blueprinted (trued) so with the chassis, probably best bang for the buck. Trueing a rem plus the cost of the action makes actions like the stiller attractive pricewise.

I have a surgeon action. It's nice due to the integral recoil lug that I have the option of swapping my own barrels with only an action wrench and barrel vice. Once a Smith has cut me the new barrel of course.

The bolt throw of the surgeon is smooth. So too are tikka's. Tikka's are better than rem or savage because of the longer barrel tenon thread. More threads, more secure barrel. There's my 2 cents

The thing i really love about savage, it’s got a floating bolt head, with an easy self install with correct headspace barrel system.
In my opinion, buying a basic savage 10 gives better barrel options than buying a basic rem700, if you wish to avoid smith and self install with minimal investment in tools. Which is a great perk if you ask me.

My next action will be called Ultimatum.
They have a savage style floating bolt head (with 3 lugs instead iirc), and use savage barrel threads.
They are also remington 700 trigger compatible and use rem 700 action footprint.
So you get the easy savage pre fit barrels, with rem 700 footprint.
If you are reading this ultimatum, you already got my money i just need to save for it!

CA is cheaper.

Prefits for Savage, Rem 700, 783, HOWA, Ruger Precision Rifle and others are already possible in either Steel or CR wrapped barrels.

If looking for a CF wrapped barrel, I can offer CarbonSix and I bet these will be the lowest price and they are working great for me.

PM or Email.

Thanks,
I'm just looking for the best option but at the lowest cost.

Plan is for a 20 inch CFW barrel, prefit.
An action that's good but low cost.

I don't want to buy the barrel, trigger etc. Just the action.
I like that the Savage don't need to be trued.

I can get a Christenson Arms rem prefit for $1000 all in.
A proof research for $1200 all in.

If I can find athe action I'm looking for, I can put a CFW prefit on,timney trigger, and get a chassis. Maybe a mapul ?

So I'll have a light rig for playing around with.

I'm trying to keep weight down, but it's got to look cool:)
Plus I really like a pistol grip, find it way more comfortable

Thinking Cadex might be the answer.

I've had a couple of similar, full customs, but the lack of the CFW barrel was my downfall.

And I don't think I'll notice much difference,going with a cheaper action.
Not for what I'm doing,anyways.

I think I can get this done for about $2400.
I have a buddy, retired Gun smith, and he'll help me with this. So no cost there.

So that still leaves me with, what action.

I have no prob with the rem, but the truing is the deal breaker.

So maybe a Savage action.

But the savage prefit,is $150 more.
So you see where I'm at right?

Rem action ,trued $750,
Barrel. $1200

Savage action????
Barrel. $1000

My next build will be this method.

Get the best of both worlds, a true custom action that has a floating and changeable bolt head. Prefit barrel options with no gunsmithing required. Rem 700 trigger options and Rem 700 stock/chassis options (from a basic Boyds stock to an uber expensive custom chassis).

If you have a gunsmith buddy to help you out, I'd say get a Rem 700 action, have him true it and then spin up a cfw barrel for you. Most people have neglected to mention that a Rem prefit won't work on a trued Rem receiver as most trueing processes involve redoing the threads in the receiver. You could just get a new Rem 700 action and spin on a prefit your self without truing the receiver, most of the new ones are known for being quite "true" from the factory.
