I'm interested in this model as a target shooter, deer and elk gun. I am not familiar with it but am interested in a 30-06. Thought I would ask around for tips, chatter or general discussion on this make.

Any reliability issues or anything else I need to be aware of? What's a good grain for elk vs deer? What about effective range?

Thank you.

It's not a proper target rifle, but for a hunting rifle, it's not a bad target rifle. It is a good hunting rifle, and pretty good value. Although it doesn't come with the AccuTrigger, the conventional trigger can be adjusted. The .30-06 is probably the best all-purpose hunting cartridge for N. America. For deer, bullet weights from 125gr. up, for elk, from 150 up, if the bullets are properly made.

I bought a Savage 111FCXP3 a few years back in .300WM. It was accurate with the junk scope it came with, and is a real shooter with a Leopold VX1 on it now.

My gunsmith did an excellent job of positioning my scope to match my stature, and it now serves all my big game hunting needs using factory Federal ammo with 165GR TSX bullets.

Just got one today as well from WS in GP, cept mines in 300WM...

seems well fitting and was very clean from the factory... scope is kinda cheap but what can you expect for the price?!?!?!

Dont hesitate on the sale... a timmney trigger is around $130 and theres lots and lots of other upgrades available... it's a solid platform to start with.

Gotta get mine to the range tommorow and see what she will do but im guessing my steel plate will be singing at 300M all day...

I have one in 300wm. The rings are cheap. Tighten the bases down tight get new rings. The scope is decent for hunting but better glass can't hurt. Very good rifle for hunting. They're accurate and reliable. For deer a 150gr fusion and for elk 165+ tsx or nolser partition will get the job done. I use 180gr in my win mag

4" low, 1.5" right, 3 shots to correct, bang TING, Bang TING, bang TING... About 12 rounds was enough on my shoulder for the day.. Think I will spread out the break in over a couple dozen trips... Seems to shoot quite nice, trigger is "ok".. I won't post a group till I have 50rnds down range but I have high hopes after today.

It's easy to make a new, lighter, trigger spring, because the spring is pretty much just an L shape. Take the old one out and go to an RC model hobby shop. Buy some music wire of the next diameter down and make your own. That, combined with backing off the preload a little will make for a better trigger. The lighter wire is superior to just backing off the screw, because when you just back off the screw, it drops tension in all positions, and that might make for an unreliable reset of the trigger.

i like mine in 30-06
accurate and has taken a few deer.
180g federal cheapies do the trick
nice cheap gun you dont have to baby when hunting

I just bought one in 30-06 and I love it. Has almost no recoil.

Heh... It's the excitement of a new gun and thick winter clothing! Bench that rifle in the summer and shoot a few boxes in a t-shirt and you might have a different opinion :D

Nice camo stock, i like it!

Blue loctite your bases before you pump too many rounds thru it, when the screws shake loose you will loose your zero and have to start again... Just some friendly advice.

I had one of these. I loved its functionality and quality of the functioning bits. I did find the finish to be severely lacking though.

The trigger adjusted down quite well. It's actually a pretty good trigger, especially once adjusted.

Far superior to the Axis in my opinion.

All of that said, I've learned to purchase firearms in a little higher price bracket so I'm happy with the whole package. The gun is accurate and reliable and I love the magazine BUT the bluing is poor. I got tired of saying "BUT".

I find that the price range of about $650 for just the rifle gets your into that range where you don't have to say "but" anymore. You can get a stainless Vanguard Series 2 for that kind of money and considering you're purchasing a rifle presumably for the rest of your life, it's worth it.

I got tired of selling them constantly because deep down I just wasn't happy with them.

If you're less picky, it might be a great rifle for you.
