OK, call me crazy...:p ... but I've put one together. Just recieved my new Savage 210F Slug Warrior today (from Elwood Epps :D) and put my accessories on it. It actually does have a purpose; I've been chasing the same damn deer around for two years. The closest I have ever been able to get to him is 300 meters. Doug knows who I'm talking about and it's location is top secret;) .

Thus the bright idea to put this together. The shells I have ordered are a couple days away from delivery. This shooter would not even be considered, but with Winchesters new SSP123 I believe 300 meters is attainable.

I'm taking it to the range on the Friday of the long weekend to sight it in. I'm taking guess's on how big the pattern will be at 300 meters. The lucky guesser will get a used Universal 4-32 scope as a prize. The scope been laying around here for a couple years, it's time it went.

My Savage 210F sports the following accessories:

Weaver mounts and high Weaver rings.
Bushnell 4200 6-24x40 Mildot
Harris Bipod Series 1A2 13"-27"

I am looking at the scope, it looks like a 4200 similar to what I used to have. The one thing I noticed is that the windage adjustment is not visible; is this just a temporary installation to take the photo, or do I see an oopsy? The main thing that caught me is that Bushnell always puts the writing on the bottom of the tube, but it can be seen just in front of the rear ring.

Best group --> 4.75 inches
Average group--> 5.50 inches

Nice setup! And it looks like the scope is mounted 90 degrees counterclockwise... Corey noticed it in the pic first and I think he's right...

Cheers

Here's my guess, and don't be offended, I just don't have much confidence in the accuracy of a slug at that distance.

(someone took my guess of 12"...)
14 inches. if you could call that a group... :D :D :D

Goodluck!

That looks ####in' COOL!!!! I like it!!

Having no experience w/muzzleloaders or slug guns, I'm gonna guess 2.5 MOA at 300 metres, which works out to 7.5 inches. This is just calculations from ballistics alone (1152 fps and 1135 ft/lbs at 300 metres!!!), having checked the specs for the load you mentioned on Winchester's website :D Best of luck to you!!

Hi all, thanks for all the guessing on what the groups will be. Yes the scope is 90 degrees from where it should be. An oops, not bolted into place, I was just so excited to get the pics up. Situation has been rectified.;)

Wow from 4" to 20", this will be a real lottery. I'll be sure to take along a couple witness's for verification. I'll get it dialed to 300 meters and shoot three groups of three.

Heck, that should only use up about $70.00 of ammo. :eek: :D

I am getting 4.25" groupings with my Rem 870 Express 20 gauge at 200 yards using Barnes Expanders. This is my 50 to 200 yard slug gun. The Savage 210F will be my (hopefully) 200 to 400 yard slug gun. This is of course only made a wee bit easier with my mildot scopes.

Stay tuned next week for the results and pics of the targets. My goal is to be 8" or under and I'll consider her a shooter.

I think Mister Big is in serious trouble. I am rootin' for ya, Arch!

But 300 metres is one honkin' long shot with a slug, no matter how fast it is going when it leaves the tube. I reckon you need a laser range finder in a large way, since the drop on the slug will be parabolic at longer ranges. SWAG (rectal pluck) suggests that even if you are dialed in to achieve a decent "group" (minute of deer) at 300 metres, the rate of drop at that range might take the slug another four (???) inches lower at 325.

Have you asked BIGREDD about his experience with slugs past 200 metres??? He might have some advice, and I GUARANTEE he will have an opinion....

FTR, my guess for average group size at 300 metres is 16 inches, which means I think the deer can be taken, but just barely. My hope is that you will have spent enough money and time on ammo (!!!) by the time Mister Big appears that you nail him at closer range and know what the ballistics are for that shot.

That is one ###y looking shotgun, Arch!

Sauvestre

I would be curious of how the Sauvestre fléchette round would fare at that distance.

They have a very interesting fletched round (it resembles the Abrams tank smoothbore ammo) with a high ballistic coefficient (for a slug). You can get them in lead or copper with a very clever "expansion ring".
And, because of that arrow stabilization thing, they can be shot from a smooth bore with very high accuracy. :)
