Well guys this is my 338 Lapua Improved. It is based on a Savage 111 large shank action.

The stock is a Joel Russo A5L that was surplus from another project so it took some doing to get it to fit. I think it looks pretty good though..

Let the flaming begin..LOL..

Barrel block is all Anderson Arms..LOL.. built by my buddy MrCowboy..LOL.. In fact he did most of the work.

The barrel is a Pac-Nor 1-9 Twist uncontoured 1.125 all the way for 32".

We are still going to machine some off the top of the block to fit the scope...

How timely. I happen to be fire formimg 300 338 Lapua brass this weekend.
Local birds are loving all the roasted corn meal!
Then we sort, neck size, maybe trim a few, prime and load for real.

You are a bit of a massochist with no brake, but you are not the only one out there shooting a howitzer without one.

Let us know what sort of velocities you are getting from the 32" barrel. Like everyone else, i am stoked to see the new Berger 300 grain bullets... they would be a nice fit to your rifle.

Should shoot great but I would have a HUGE brake on that thing. Big recoil wuss now :)

Not trying to be critical but I see you left the recoil lug in place. Is the action floating or bolted in ?

Also, you may find the taller Farrell base easier for you to set up your optics.

Great project rifle for sure.

I been using 15 grains of Green Dot, fill the case with corn meal or cream of wheat up to the neck/shoulder, pack a bit of tissue down to hold it all in. Makes a big mess. Shoot with the wind.
 
What does the rifle weigh?
May be the gigantic block, but it looks like a small barrel contour to be blocking?
My 16 pound Edge has a brake...Something to consider.

Looking forward to seeing how it shoots!
 
i fire formed all my brass with 10gr unique powder and filled to the neck with cornmeal and then put a wax cap on it to hold it all it. it gets it about 95% of the way but doesnt get the nice 40 degree shoulder until they are fired once.
 
OK.. here we go.. sorry if some of this doesn't make sense I just got home from night shift..

Jerry.. the action is floating and it isn't a recoil lug just a stainless washer Jay built.. I may put a brake on.. but would like to try it with out first and see how bad it is.. I HATE BRAKES..LOL.. nasty things really..

X-fan.. The rifle as you see it weighs 17.5 pounds.. The barrel is a 1.125 no contour and yes the block is big.. I think we over engineered it.. This is our first kick at building a block and there are already changes in the works to allow a scope to be mounted lower. 1/16th is coming off the top then a channel will be machined in to allow the objective to sit maybe 1/4 inch lower.. Hopefully it works as planned..

Ian.. I will be sure to post some results when I get them.. I gave up waiting for the Bergers and ordered 1000 300gr Lapua Scenars.. I sure hope I can get them to shoot..LOL

I have to admit I was worried every one would criticize this project as it is our first really ground up project like this.. I can tell you we learned a lot.. When our nice new Shilens show up for the 300 Winnies we are building we will put some of that knowledge to work.

There is always room for new ideas and projects. Some will work, some not so much, but if shooters don't try new things and innovate...

We would have stopped at the flint lock muzzle loader.

I always look forward to see what is on the other side of the hill.

After reading I understand that square contraption is a barrel block? Never seen one, what is its intended purpose?
 
The barrel block is the connection between the barrelled action and the stock.
Where most conventional rifles bed the action into the stock and leave the whole of the barrel floating, with the barrel block, both the action and the front of the barrel are floating.
