Hey Guys,
Thinking of buying a Savage Model: 10/110 BA in 338 Lapua. Anybody have any feed back? I have been all about pistols and semi auto rifles for years, but I recently bought a heavy/short barrel Remington 700. Now I have the bug, and feel the need to reach out and touch something! Lol and I thought handguns were expensive!

I've owned a Savage 10BA for about a year and a half now. I own a couple of other Savage guns, I think for the average shooter (which I know I am!), they offer good value for the money.

Before I bought my BA, I decided to go with the 10 BA over the 110BA, as .308/7.62x51 typically costs a fair bit less than .300 WinMag and especially .338LM.

However, after shooting .308 out of a fairly large/heavy gun for a year and a half, then realizing how large of an arc the .308 flies when you get out past 800 plus yards, I've had the yearning to move up to the one of the bigger brother BA's to get a flatter shooting round in basically the same package!

As I didn't want two BA rifles, I was originally thinking of selling my BA and buying a 110BA. Now that I see I shoot my AR's and pistols more than I thought, and I only shoot the BA at long ranges from time to time, I figured I'd go BIG and get the .338LM model as I don't see myself shooting a lot of rounds! Although, I will start reloading for this round from day one!

However, two weeks ago a friend of mine came down for a visit and he brought along his new Savage 110 FCP HS chambered in .338LM. We took it to the range and I had the opportunity to fire 7 rounds out of it.
What a nice gun to shoot! Accurate, really not a lot of recoil (not much more than my 10 BA!) and it's a nice, more standard looking, rifle.

SO! Latest update. I am going to keep the BA and order a new 110 FCP HS in .338LM in January!!

IMO, if you want to 'play' with .338LM and don't want to spend 5-6K plus on one of the high end guns, you can't beat the value of either the 110 BA ($1900 - $2100), or the 10 FCP HS ($1300 - $1500). If you want the 'Look Cool Factor' of the 110 BA, go with it, keep in mind it is a heavy piece. But in .338LM that's a nice feature! If you want the looks of a more traditional rifle, the 10 FCP HS is a good choice (approx. 4.5 lbs less than BA). Savage also offer the 111 Long Range Hunter in .338LM which sells for just over 1K, and is another pound or so lighter than the FCP!

Good luck shopping! And shooting.

I have a 110 BA in .300 win mag. Right now I'm using the stock scope rail and a Sightron 8-32x56 LR-MOA scope. So far I've only had the chance to shoot it out to 600 yards. With Hornady Superformance 180gr SST factory ammo I'm shooting a solid MOA. Its pretty easy to keep 10 shots inside 6" at 600 yards. I'm waiting on reloading supplies but when I get my dies and brass I'm sure I can get my reloads to shoot well under 1/2 MOA.

One tip for long distance shooting is to spend lots of money on glass. A rifle is nothing with out a quality scope.

How far are you wanting to shoot? Shooting somthing smaller might also be a good idea. Take a look at Savages target rifles. If you like that look.

I have a new Savage 111 LRH in 338 Lapua. It is a solid shooter and kicks like a pussy cat with the big brake doing a great job. The accutrigger is a marvel. Shoots around .75MOA with factory ammo. Waiting for my dies.

The 1-9" barrel should handle the 300 grain VLD bullets with a b.c. around .800. 2500 ft pounds at 700 yards. Should be nice elk rig.

Sounds like we are all waiting for dies.

My dies and bullets have been sitting in a warehouse about 40 miles from my house since 01.32 hours Christmas eve. I just called the shipping company, I had built my hopes up but they don't ship today. :(

There's only so many times I can sort my brass to make the time go faster. :D

Check out Juanvaldez. He has Savage 110 FCP .338 LM at a very good price. I got one for Christmas. Looks very nice and the recoil is very well managed by the muzzle break. Haven't put a scope on yet but I am looking forward to seeing if it can match my 338 Edge that he built for me.

Yes he seems to be getting all my gun money. But he is also my shooting partner.

Would be nice to share our reloading progress here. I am going to try the 275 Barnes LRX, 225 TTSX and the 300 Sierras and Bergers for starters.

Maybe we need a new thread for load info. I can't believe how popular 338 LM is getting, although I'm sure a lot of this down to Savage and of course North Shore Barrels (Juanvaldez) for giving us great deals. :D

I am gonna try 300 SMKs and H1000 first.

I can find them for $44 a box of 50. The guy is very reliable and is close to Montreal. He is not a CGN dealer so send me a PM if your interested. I have no affiliation, so if you think I am paying too much send me a PM and tell me that too. :D

Yep, the 500 deal is better. I just checked my invoice $43.34 for 50. Not quite WSS prices. But I switched to this guy because so far he has always had what I wanted in stock. And the prices tend to be better or so close its not worth me waiting for the components. Shipping was $12 and I bought more than bullets.

Jerry,

if these work me then I'l contact you to see if you can better the Epps deal on 500.

I'm working on a deal to do significantly better on these prices for the smk's. Will make them available ASAP. Shipping kills the prices though so think bulk or group buys.

Cheers

Got my dies and now have 49 sorted and decaped 338 LMs to size. I never used Redding bushing dies and I am always appreciating the help of more experienced CGNers.

I just received my "complete set" #78594. Should I have received a shell holder with these?

I would appreciate tips on setting up the body die and neck bushing die. Instructions are instructions but I know from experience that experience counts.

I am sizing once fired 338 LM. The cost is making me extra careful.

Thanks guys.
