I've owned a Savage 10BA for about a year and a half now. I own a couple of other Savage guns, I think for the average shooter (which I know I am!), they offer good value for the money.
Before I bought my BA, I decided to go with the 10 BA over the 110BA, as .308/7.62x51 typically costs a fair bit less than .300 WinMag and especially .338LM.
However, after shooting .308 out of a fairly large/heavy gun for a year and a half, then realizing how large of an arc the .308 flies when you get out past 800 plus yards, I've had the yearning to move up to the one of the bigger brother BA's to get a flatter shooting round in basically the same package!
As I didn't want two BA rifles, I was originally thinking of selling my BA and buying a 110BA. Now that I see I shoot my AR's and pistols more than I thought, and I only shoot the BA at long ranges from time to time, I figured I'd go BIG and get the .338LM model as I don't see myself shooting a lot of rounds! Although, I will start reloading for this round from day one!
However, two weeks ago a friend of mine came down for a visit and he brought along his new Savage 110 FCP HS chambered in .338LM. We took it to the range and I had the opportunity to fire 7 rounds out of it.
What a nice gun to shoot! Accurate, really not a lot of recoil (not much more than my 10 BA!) and it's a nice, more standard looking, rifle.
SO! Latest update. I am going to keep the BA and order a new 110 FCP HS in .338LM in January!!
IMO, if you want to 'play' with .338LM and don't want to spend 5-6K plus on one of the high end guns, you can't beat the value of either the 110 BA ($1900 - $2100), or the 10 FCP HS ($1300 - $1500). If you want the 'Look Cool Factor' of the 110 BA, go with it, keep in mind it is a heavy piece. But in .338LM that's a nice feature! If you want the looks of a more traditional rifle, the 10 FCP HS is a good choice (approx. 4.5 lbs less than BA). Savage also offer the 111 Long Range Hunter in .338LM which sells for just over 1K, and is another pound or so lighter than the FCP!
Good luck shopping! And shooting.
