For being a semi auto, the savage 64 is impressive. i put over 1000 rounds through it and using bulk ammo, and is shooting 5 round group at 50 yards 1/4" moa. The scope is a cheap tasco 3-9 by 3. gonna try a few target rounds and see if it gets better.

Bought a new one for an upcoming project. Shoots pretty good, have a bi-pod and Tasco Target Varmint on it. I find the mag has sharp edges when loading.

The same basic rifle in production for 50+ years means something.

Well said. Although I have never used one, I know of several that have given good service for many years. I do own a Model 8C that is stamped for "Simpson Sears", mint, probably never fired, and probably will never be fired, at least not as long as I can raise my head! It came with two mags, one of which I doubt has ever been in the rifle.

I have a Cooey 64B manufactured in the early 1970"s. I just bought some magazines for a new Savage 64 and they are an exact fit. Not too many rifles around with that kind of longevity.

Bass pro has the savage 64 in black synthetic in the Xmas flyer for 130$, when beat old bolt cooeys fetch $100 that's hard to beat. I'd.like.to.find a vintage Cooey 64 but it would actually cost me more than a new one.

I have the 64 TR-SRR with the boyd stock and 16" flutted heavy barrel, shoots great puts my ruger to shame.
Accuracy is fantastic for a semi .22. love popping ballons zombie head size at 100yrds great fun. Oh ya the barrel is also suppressor ready to bad we cant have them :(

Cheap plastic trigger guard is my only problem with the firearm.

What is dry? I wipe parts with oil on a cloth then quick wipe with clen dry cloth is this dry? I have early model cooey 64 with a plastic trigger gaurd is this common?

I have no probs with the firearm, oiled or dry. The mags have had the probs with sticking or hanging up. The new savage mags, but a little cleaning and the red follower runs smooth.

Other than that the little sucker makes my ruger look like a remy with a accuracy problems.

Oh and I have the 64 TR-SR

i don't think there is a wood version of the savage 64. don't quote me on that though.as for 10/22's alot of people like tham because there is so much after market parts for it. and from what i seen shoots ok but all guns have their own probs.

updated thoughts. i will be replacing the tasco and putting on a weaver base made for .22 to accept a nc star 3-9 by 50 e, with illuminated cross hairs, along with adding a bipod and also installing a adjustable cheek peice so i can have a proper cheek weld and see out of the scope.total cost around 300 or more.

I just took delivery of one of these last week and mounted the first scope I had spare which was a Bushnell 3-9 x 56 ;) and I took it to the range yesterday for the first time and as shocked at the ragged holes it produced at 25 yards after a quick zeroing. I had a lot of feeding problems with one magazine (which will be internally polished - perhaps that will fix it) but the other magazine worked flawlessly. The rifle just sits there as you pull the trigger putting them in the same hole over and over. Quite impressed especially for the price. Must buy more ammo and magazines...
