Savage 99 (.308) Vs. Win mod 88

The rotary type internal magazine is actually better than the "C" (box magazine) version which was a cost saving measure. The rotary magazine retains it value better and is a way better system. (m99) One of the most famous rifles the Mannlicher Shoenauwer also has a rotary mag. The m88 has a full length stock like a bolt action thats why I mentioned it doesn't look like a lever except for the lever. OH, I'd pick a BLR over a m88 any day.

C for clip

Don't know the year, but yes, it's the 99C. Savage calls their magazines "clips" and designated their 99 and 110 with removeable mags as the 99-C and 110-C.

As you have stated,C in savage land, stands for clip.Probably why a they are generaly refered to as clips.Magazines are what you read.Dating myself I guess.

The clip/magazine mix-up pre-dates the 99C. Magazines are erroneously referred to as clips. I took a good flaming about it once in a thread on a Mini 14 and have called it a mag ever since. Not that it's that big of a deal, but there is a difference and the correct term is magazine when referring to the 99C, 88, or any other gun with a detachable mag. I wouldn't say they are "generally referred to as clips."

It has been agreed upon by most folk, in another thread or threads, that in this day and age, both detachable magazines and clips can be used to describe that lil cartridge holding sucka, without getting a spanking or lick'n or a flaming or being hung from the highest tree. Hope this can clear the air.

While I agree that the rotary magazines hold more value and are a very elegant system, I do like the detachable magazine version for ease of use and I have never had problems with mine. It's nice to be able to keep a loaded magazine in your pocket while in the truck going to or from hunting camp.

Obviously with tube and spool fed mag guns you can cycle the rounds through to unload and those systems have worked for more than a century, sometimes it's nice to be able to unload the rifle with the push of a button.

I certainly wouldn't (and didn't) overlook a nice Savage because it has the detachable magazine, unless you're collecting. My 99C has no collector value since it has had the barrel cut down and crowned (professional job), had sling swivels installed, the tang safety and detachable mag and press cut checkering. All things that Savage purists poo-poo or otherwise gag at. But it makes a super handy gun to carry, and I'm pretty sure it's had a professional trigger job because of how amazing it is. It's a shooter through and through so I'm extremely happy with it despite all its so called 'negative' points.

I've hunted with both the 99 and the 88, and given my choice I'd choose the 99. The 88 has it in looks, but pretty don't haul freight. The Savage has it in handling, feel, and practical accuracy, in no small part probably because of that abysmal trigger on the 88.

We have several 88s and 99s, and Sako Finnwolfs, and the nicest one is actually the Finnwolf. The Finnwolf looks similar to the 88, mechanically different, but far smoother and definitely more refined.
