Savage 99 (.308) Vs. Win mod 88

I have both, and I can't say I have a preference. The 99 hand carries nicer than the 88, but the 88 is a lot smoother. I do not care for the 99C model but it is what I have right now. I much prefer the "F" model with the schanbel forend and straight stock. The 88 trigger can be worked some but as noted the 99 trigger lends it's self to working even better. They are both nice, functional, high intensity lever guns, neither being "high end" nor junk.

Bah. I dont know how anyone can describe the 99 as "perty". Theirs just something about it for me that makes it ugly.

Now, can we agree that the BLR is the ugliest lever action?

Yes, I agree that the BLR is "butt ugly" but its worst feature is that short throw lever that destroys all sense of feel and timing...

For this discussion, I will go with the 99 in .300 Savage... And a little brother in .250/3000.

I own both. Two 99's and one 88. .

- The favorite 99 is a 1950's 99F , 308. . It's a real nice gun to shoot and hunt with. The negative is the #### on closing.

- The M88 is a pre-64. . It's important to use only a correct M88 Winchester magazine and not the later ones or aftermarket ones. . The trigger needs to be kept clean and lubricated to maintain good trigger pull. . With this said, it's an excellent gun, cycles smooth, shoots and carries well.

It's a tough call to choose the better of the two, and I'd hate to live on difference, but the M88 being a pre-64 Winchester and cocks on open would put it in front on most days..

Win mod 88 will allways be my favourite.
I trust my " bolt action with lever" like no other. From half a doz few years ago I am down to two. Biggest regret? I sold my rebareled 358Win to someone here in CGN after useing it for more than 10 years and experiencing "truck load" of memory with it. Since then I rebareled another one (243Win with bulged barrel) with 338 Shilen barrel into 338 Federal so my nightmares are over. I still have one ILNC in 308Win as a spare but really....did anybody ever heard of Win Mod88 fail in any way? Some of them have problem with inferior wood in stock when abused and bulged barrels if somebody shoots them with barrels full of snow but that can happen to any firearm....Action on the other hand is rock solid unlike rear locking bolt in Savage 99 that "stretches" action a little every shot.
I also have Marlin mod 336 in 35Rem, I like it to, a lot but it will never be as flexible as Winnie.
