Savage 99 safety issue.

Why not?

I recently acquired a 99 takedown in 250-3000 that was supposed to be A+ mechanical condition. The bore looks like new, bright with sharp rifling, however the rifle has a number of issues. Will take them one at a time.

One of the most aggravating is the safety. It slides ahead when the lever is operated, and one cannot fire the rifle until it is slid back into the firing position. Not that a single shot 99 is all bad, but that's not what I was expecting. ;)

At first I thought I was hitting it with my index finger somehow, but now it appears to be that it is just too loose in the slot.

Anyone know an easy fix for this?

Thanks,
Ted

Sounds like it needs a new safety spring. The safety has a pin through it that pop over a ridge in a spring. If the spring is bent or non existent the safety will slide very loosely.

Take the stock off and inspect it, and figure out how it works and why it is so loose... home gunsmithing 101.
