Savage 99c question

Just recently aquired a Savage 99c in .308. This is the first rifle, lever or bolt, I have come accross that you cannot release the trigger by holding down the trigger while closing the action. i.e. when you've armed the action and just want to un-#### the trigger/firing pin in a non firing situation. In this case, when I hold the trigger down, I can lever the action closed (with a little "stiffness") and then the trigger releases with a snap or, no different than dry-firing. I don't really want to dry fire it each time, but if I have to so be it. I have two other Savage internal rotary mag style rifles and decocking is not a problem with them.

My question - is this the way it is with the 99c? or should I take it apart and investigate?

Thanks - in advance

Get some 308 snap caps. A-zoom makes them, among others. Check Google.

X 2 on the snap caps! And if you want to add a little fun, take the rifle to WSS with the snap cap in, tell them you want bases to fit this rifle. They will immediately grab the rifle and open the action. The snap cap will fly out and the look on their face will be enough to make you P your pants in laughter! This is what happened when I took my Finnwolf to WSS in the murder capital. I didn't plan it to happen that way, it just did! My appolgies to the guy behind the counter, if you are reading this!

Old timers around these parts just leave the **last** fired case in the chamber or re chamber a used one after they clear the mag **prove safe** No big deal to those that don't wear real tree camo petticoats. ;)

Also be careful if the A-zooms, I had one jam up a win 94 I had something fierce with the snap caps soft aluminium rim failing on the cartridge stop and the round went under the lifter...(>_<)!

Might not be a worry in the Savages rotary mag system.

Don't feed the snap caps through the action. Just drop one into the chamber by hand.

There was a design change, that's why the older 99's will "slip close" and the newer ones won't. I asked about this about a year ago or so. I was going to modify mine, but sold the rifle.

Savage 99's could always be slip closed up to 1960 when they switched to the tang safety. Any 99's made after that cannot be slip closed without dry firing the rifle. Doesn't matter if it's a 99C, 99DL, 99F, etc...etc. If it's got a tang safety it won't slip close.

I'm guessing your other two 99's have lever safeties and are pre1960 rifles.

Yep - thanks for the reply

Interesting - I've had several 99's, some with tang safeties, some with lever safeties. all of them followed the design change rule, except one 99C model in 308 - it will slip close.
