I've always liked the Savage 99 in particular the featherweight 99F from the 1950's. I've owned several in .300 Savage(seems the most common) a few in .308 and seen two in the flesh in .243. Got this recently it a 1956 99f in .250/3000 the first 250 I've had in the 99f. I think by the 1950's the 250 had fallen out of favour and the 243 was much more glamorous. This one is in good shape except missing rear sight elevator. Any of you Savage guys see many 99f's in .250/3000 ? Just wondered if they are more common in other areas or if scarce, is there a premium placed on .250 99f's?

I have a 1951 with minimal wear and a hair line crack at the tang that I fixed with west epoxy from Lee Valley. I bought other within a couple months and I paid a similar price for others in various calibers. Its only been shot at the range so far. Had it out hunting but no luck. I am up to six and a parts gun. Spanning 1900 to 1964. 303 Savage, 38-55, 30-30, 308 win,300 Savage and 250 Savage. I do like shooting the 250. I started making brass out of 243 win as I had lots and no rifle to shoot it in. I sized 5 and a friend called and asked what I was up to. She came over and handed me 60 some cases. Sometimes things line up.

I have the 243, 250, 300 and 308. When I bought the .300, it came with a 1 x 4" bar of stainless steel in the butt bolt hole. It did have good balance though!

I agree the 99F is the best one of the 99's. I have a 99F from 1956 in 308. My son has laid claim to it and has used it since he started hunting as a boy.

Also have a 99 from 1919 in 250-3000 in deluxe take down. It's very similar in weight to the 99F. The 250-3000 seem to enjoy a premium in price, especially the pre-war and again the pre-1927 models. The 1919 model has a very well shaped buttstock and forend requiring extra hand fitting and finishing. The only negative it's been drilled and tapped wearing a 4X scope. The 1919 has every part serial numbered to the gun including the buttplate. There was some serious pride in fitting and machining in those days.

Ever see one in .284 or .358?
I can’t say for sure if I have, but probably about 4 years ago Wards auction had a whack of 99’s go through and a lot were beyond my price range at the time. That’s where I got the .358, 284 from a lucky day at Cabelas.IMG_4576.jpegHere’s a few of mine,
.375C
.358
.284
7-08.

(The takedown maybe non factory wood?)

Pulling the butt plate and forend to check serial numbers would be quick, could be factory wood with later embellishment checkering on the cheeks.

Hey Mike
I didn’t have a picture of my 99F’s other than a group photo which would have been confusing on my phone.

So… 308/1966. 300/1957. 250/1955. And a 243/1957. Equipped just the way I got them with scopes and sling swivels, cleaned them up and that’s as far as they made it, shooting to start when I retire…..pfffft!

I would love to find a takedown in 308 or 300 savage, I had one but it was in too rough a shape to my liking! That said it wasn’t an F, did the F was offered in take down?

i almost bought a 250sav 2 weeks ago.. dude wanted $1100 .. i couldnt do it even though ive wanted a 250 for years n years.
Dad usto talk about his uncle that had one n said it was like a lazer on deer. Dad had a 300sav in 99c which was great but had the typical tang crack. i inherrited that 99c but its a safe queen due to memories attached to it..

No, the more modern F-featherweight wasn’t offered in t/d. T/D’s ended about 1941.
What’s confusing with Savage is that they would use the same alphabetical letter over and over again I think the “F” was used 4 times.
Some T/D’s.
a1910- 1899 in .303/refinished.
1915 -1899/250-3000 Special Deluxe/refinished for introduction of the 250/3000 cartridge in 1915.
1916-1899/“F” .22HP
1922-1899/99 “F” in .300. Savage had started to change from 1899—to just using 99. Also changed threads from 1/4 turn interrupted on my .22 to continuous threads on the .300. IMG_4605.jpeg
