Savage A22 any good?

It is fine. Nice to have a fuller sized rifle. Disassembly is easy, a mounted scope does make it a tad harder.

Accuracy to be nothing special I was doing a bout a 2" group comprised of 75 rounds. May of been able to tighten it up with a little more care and better ammo. I also shoot the cheapest stuff I can find, so...

10 round mag works flawlessly, but is a pain in the but to load. Pain in the butt as it has sharpish edges. Perhaps I just load it wrong.

the 25 round mag works. Fairly easy to load. I had some issues getting it to seat/lock in place originally. Turned out the I wasn't clicking the plastic latch well enough. (easier shown through a photo)

I bought mine because I wanted to plink larger capacity magazines. If 10/22 mags weren't in legal limbo and Remington out of business I may not of got one. It isn't a bad rifle it just isn't as well established yet in the aftermarket department.

Great gun, easy to clean and simple trigger to adjust.
10 round mags work flawlessly, 25 round mags I had some issue with but they might just be ammo picky.[no FTF with Federal after switching to it]

accuracy is definitely affected by ammo, switched from CCI standard to RWS Target and went from 1.5" groups at 50 yards to clovering the bullseye.

A or B ?

Just a bit of info. The A-22 is said (I have the B22) to be almost as accurate as the B. My B22 does 1/2-3/4" @ 50yds constantly with just CCI-SV or Federal 40g SV (NOT the 36g-it's HV), even Fed Auto-Match. All $5/bx ammo. The 10 round mags do have a 'sharpish' edge, I filed it smooth (pic below). I've also read that the 25-rnd mags have 'weak spring' in many of them, quit feeding if fully loaded. The ones in chassis run about $6-700, my B-22 FV was $350 from Flahertys last Fall (so are the FV-SR). And cleaning the B-22 is super simple since you can just blow the action with solvent then fluid-film and clean the bore.
Just my opinion - YMMV

My buddy that I was asking for ended up going for a Ruger 10/22, because the Cabelas sale ($329) ended, and Tenda had a 10/22 for less. Between the two, which do you think is the better system (not including aftermarket)? Which do you think the future of rimfires should be based around? If I'm being totally honest, I've never seen a single issue with the 10/22 other than being hard to clean, and the inherent other issues with all semi auto .22s. But it sounds like the A22 may as well be the design of the future if it has a couple of advantages. Is it as reliable as the 10/22 with a variety of ammo?

I don't have any experience with an A22 or know anything about it, but I have had a 10/22 for 13 years...I can confirm it is a reliable gun, I have shot different ammo in it (Winchester, CCI, Remington), and every single mag I used on it has fed without issues except initially way back when when I used a Butler Creek mag that did not have steel lips. I did have issues but that was the mag, and within a week I bought the steel lips version and it was fine. I didn't do any accessorizing on it - just a Bushnell scope and that's it. Everything else stock. It's not the most exciting look for a rifle (I got the stock wood version), but it's dependable and reliable.

Yeah mine was really good except with Winchester Super X but that's garbage ammo so who cares lol. They're great, great guns. The prices on them are getting ridiculous however.

Hmmm...I spent part of my weekend building out an ammo cabinet and when I was transporting my ammo back into the much better organizing shelving of the cabinet, I notice a brick of Winchester Super X. Date of Purchase: 2008. I don't remember shooting these - must have gotten them on sale or could have been hoarding due to Obama's election.... This isn't good .22 ammo? Is it generally bad or does this not pair well with this gun because it's a semi auto? Unfortunately I was not much of an ammo aficionado back then (still am not) - just bought what was available and preferably on sale.

The A22 is intriguing. I may go get one since I do like the look of it and I do like the Savage Accutrigger (I have a Mark IIG already)

I'll vote for the A22 over the 10/22, both for ergo and accuracy. Most 10/22s need more $$$ to make them as accurate as any Savage 22 or Marlin 22. The Marlin 795 (ca $200) is a stick magazine, but waayy more accurate than Ruger out of the box, as is most any Savage. My Savage 64 ($160 five years ago) shot 0.445" @ 50 with CCI-SV last Fall. With just a $15 MCarbo sear spring added. Most 10/22s won't do that.

Keep in mind that the Accutrigger on the A22 is not the same as the one on the B22. It needs some changes to be as light as the B22. I have had both.

I have the A22 in the MDT chassis and love it. I can adjust the trigger without removing from the chassis. something I could not do when I had the B22...

Dude that ammo did not fire consistently (FTF), printed like a shotgun out of like 3 guns, one of them a Savage BVTSS that is super accurate, and I hated cleaning it. Literally bottom barrel trash that I've never bought again, even on awesome sales. Try yours, maybe my lot just sucked.

My A22 scored better than some of the bolt guns at the last CMP match.
The best she did was a 100-4x and a 100-5x prone. That's 10 shots in the 10-ring at 50 yds. How you like them apples?
This gun handles and shoots way better than my 10/22.
It's got me thinking about upgrading to the MDT version...

Reviving this thread. I'm looking at getting an A22 Precision in the MDT chassis. Looking at the specs, seems a bit heavy at 7 1/4 pounds. I was intending on shooting this one off hand quite a bit.

Anyone have experience with the A22 Precision? Thoughts on free hand shooting vs supported? Any issues with the 25 round mags in the chassis vs the regular stock?

Basically, what I'm trying to say is someone please talk me out of one before I get it... Thanks!

I've had my Savage A22 for a couple months now, and it shoots pretty much any ammo I've put through it well. I love how easy it is to clean. Dust cover comes off and the recoil spring and bolt come right out. Don't regret buying mine for even a second!

I had the same issue with the dust cover coming off. The plastic clip was broken, examination of the recoil guide rod revealed that the pin broke on the large portion of the recoil guide. Savage was good to send a dust cover and new recoil spring assembly.
