Hey, looking to buy a deer gun on a budget. I have narrowed it down to the Savage Axis or the Remington 770. I want a bolt action rifle, with factory mounted sights, and they are in the same price range. Having read what I can, I totally realize that neither of these are great guns, but I am just starting out, and could use some input. Cheers!

If I had to pick between those two I would say get the Savage. I have seen nothing but bad reveiws on the 770. If at all possible you should look at spending a couple of hundred more and get a far better rifle like the Savage model 11 or 111 .

Also checkout the Ruger American, Stevens 200, or Marlin XL7/XS7 for budget guns.

for sure, this is the route to go! Quality good used is 10X better than new junk!
I have an Axis in 223. I found the trigger to be so poor It was hard to shoot it well. I ended up changing out the trigger myself to a Rifle Basix for $105. If I had paid full price for the rifle ($400 package) it would have not been a good deal. I would look at the trophy hunter series witht the accutriger and the improved scope or I would try and shoot an Axis before I bought it. Even if you just dry dry firing one in the gun shop to see just how bad the trigger is. If it does not bother you than the rest of the rifles short comings should also not bother you as the rifle functions very well otherwise.
I use mine for varmint hunting. I paid $250 for the package so it only cost me around $355 plus taxes with the new trigger. For a gun that shoots Sub MOA with hand loads that was a very good deal and I am very happy with it. If I was hunting big game with it I may not have bothered with the trigger, but it would restrict the range at which I would shoot.
I have only seen one 770. It was at the range and it seemed to shoot very well and the gentleman who owned it seemed very happy with it. And thats all I got to say about that.

I'd say savage. Now i could be a little biased as i own an axis and a 111, but if you want an out of the box shooter, savage has it down. From the reviews I've read the Remington is garbage.
if all you are wanting is a hunting rifle or something for back yard plinking, you can't go wrong with the axis, out of the box it is a little stiff, but its a new gun. blast a couple hundred rounds and oil the bolt good and it gets smoother.
the 111 is definitely a better rifle, for about 100-200 more depending on which model/package you get hunter or trophy, they both are out of the box alot smoother then the axis.

Good to hear everyone is saying the same as I have been thinking... that is to stay away from the 770. I would love to bump up to the Savage 11/111, or the Remington 700, but the budget is what it is! So now I guess I have to find the best value that presents itself in either the Savage Axis, or the Marlin XL7 that was mentioned. Hoping I can find it used in a .270. Thanks for the info all!
Great reading in these posts here, I am actually looking into a Savage in the .223 and didn't know which I should go for. I am now thinking more along the lines of the 11/111 as everywhere I look people are saying the trigger on the axis is stiff and a pain. But now I have another question, is it worth the extra hundred bucks to go with the Trophy Hunter XP over the Hunter XP? and is there much difference between the 11/111 and the 16/116?

The 770 is a piece of sh*t, the axis is a alright gun for the money. If you are set on buying new check out the stevens 200, around the same price as the axis but has a way better trigger. The nice thing about the stevens and savage is you won't be to unhappy if it gets bumped or scratched.

I would go with the axis. I hand load for mine and both shoot at least an inch or less at 100Y with a good load

How about a Lee Enfield? Most can be had between $100 and $350, depending on condition and furniture. 303 round is still potent.
If you don't want that, go with the Savage.

Yeah, I have been trolling the EE for something older. I am by no means a buy it new cuz it's shiny kind of person. I recently went to a gun show in Carp, and saw piles of Enfields and was very tempted. Still seem to be a reliable deer gun at a good price, but are they ever heavy. That and I love to shoot, so wanted to get something in a .270. I figure that would make a decent deer gun, and would be kinder for a long day of target practice. But then again, I am still a new guy at this, so thanks for all of the advice.
