I work at cabelas in winnipeg savage axis is 339.99 here alot of people buy it but if your spending 475 get the Remington 700 sps you won't regret it
It's been around for 51 years for a reason

Well I picked up my new rifle Saturday. Once I held the Axis 243, I felt it was pretty cheaply made IMO. So got to talking with a few of the guys there and brought this home instead :)

Its a Savage 111 Trophy Hunter XP in the .270 Cal. It just felt sooooo much nicer than the Axis. Came with a better scope and includes the Accutrigger I keep hearing about. I also purchased the bi-pod and 40 rounds, So this weekend going coyote hunting with a buddy to try er out.

Nice!

I have helped sight in two new 111s over the years and totally fell in love with them.

You might want to replace the scope after a few seasons as the two I worked with failed at the range. Mind you this was a few years ago so things could have improved.

I suspect your .270 will be a sweet shooter, enjoy. :)

Take a good hard look at the new Ruger American -- it can be found for 400 and it is a good rifle as well.

If I recall the scope is a "Weaver" 3X9. Hopefully it does me well. Cant wait to fire it.

The mag on the Trophy Hunter is a lot better, as is the stock and trigger. IMO, good choice.

***I must have handled a non Trophy Hunter 111. Alberta Boy below has one and says that it takes the Axis mag. My mistake. ***

WHAT?! The Trophy Hunter International (111) has EXACTLY the same Magazine as the savage Axis. Same plastic release, everything. If you buy a replacement magazine for it, you buy an Axis magazine. I suspect that the non-international version has the better classic magazine since it uses the old style stock and bolt release.

I purchased this rifle (11 International Trophy Hunter XP) in 7mm-08 for my wife.

I have some advice for you:

At a minimum remove the scope and tighten the rings down properly and level it properly if you have the hardware to do so. The one that we got was so unlevel, you could do better by eye balling it if you had to.

I highly recommend replacing those bases and rings. The rings are PURE garbage. The bases on mine were not even. They are weaver style but not weaver brand. I found that the tops of the bases were canted about 4 degrees off from each other. Replacing them with some Burris bases made everything level.

I highly recommend some LOW burris zee rings. They bring the scope to a more appropriate height.

The rifle shoots reasonbly well and, having owned a couple of Axis rifles, this one is superior.

Check out the turret covers, mine were cross threaded from the factory and the scope had to be replaced.

Lastly, did you say that you had 40 rounds and were going coyote hunting to test it out. Let e tell you something, that bore sighting is useless. You need to actually zero the rifle.

Here you can see the final result of what I described above. In my opinion, this is an absolute must. Be careful though, savage decided to use some kind of thread locker on the base screws and the screws are so soft the damn heads stripped right out. I had to tap them out.

You can also see the Axis magazine in these pictures.

Also, if you want to put some butler creek flip up covers on that scope, let me know and I can give you the appropriate number. The guide that they have in any store that sells them, of course, had the wrong #s in it. I can give you the correct ones as I now have them on the rifle.

Sorry Im a bit of a noob here, so thats the mounts for the scope you sugg I replace ? Ok. Have you got the p/ns for the burris parts ? I did look at the turret caps, seem Ok. And yes that would be cool if you can supply me the p/n's for the cap covers as I do want to get a set. My friend is planning on sighting the gun in for me this weekend. Great tips AB Boy, thanks alot.

Congrats on your purchase! You won't be disappointed.

I have a Savage 111FLNS in 270 wearing a Bushnell 4200 2.5-10x and an Axis in .223 with a Hawke 4.5-14x. As you know there is quite a difference in quality between the two models. My Axis shot sub MOA groups out of the box with cheap factory ammo. My 111 was anywhere from 1.25"-4" depending on the brand of ammo with Winchester XP3s in both 130 & 150 grain being the absolute worst groups (4" @ 100yards). The 111 shoots sub MOA groups using a variety of handloads. 110 grain Hornady V-max with 59 grains of H4831 being my most accurate load in the 270. <this load would make a mess of a Coyote :)
