In a burning building, in Southwestern Ontario
Ive been looking online for awhile now for feed back on this rifle. I am new to hunting and this will be my first rifle (outside a couple .22cal). My local gun shop has a new one in camo 243 cal. Im headed in there saturday to possibly trade in my Ruger GP 100 .357 Mag w/6" barrel. I never really shoot it and dont have much use for it any longer. I see the MSRP on the Axis is $475.00 and I paid like $750 for the Ruger and only shot it maybe 100 rounds. I know Im taking a kick in the pants, but really want this rifle. What do you guys think ? Worth it ? Or should I look at selling the Ruger on this site (which I havent done before) ?
 
I would try on here first. Your dealer will probably offer right about the cost of the rifle. On the EE you may get $575-$600 (for a SS one)

**Personally** I would keep the revolver and save up to buy the rifle. (long time till hunting season)
 
I have one in the same exact caliber. Now i'm a new guy to shooting but a friend of mine who introduced me to the sport came along on my first range day last week and says he's quite impressed by the Axis considering it's cost.
 
I own two and like them for the price. The triggers are pretty bad and I replaced one with a Rifle Basix and now really like shooting it. Unless you are in love with the camo stock I would not spend that much on an Axis. I would spend a little bit more and get a Trophy hunter package for about $500. The Accutrigger will be way better than the Axis stock trigger.

I picked up an Axis in .223 on Tuesday this week. I had one of the Bushnell scopes from another Savage package deal so I mounted it and went out to shoot. I got on paper at 50 yards with 5 shots and then further adjusted the scope and moved back to 100 yards. My first two 3 shot groups after getting zeroed at 100 were .5 inch.

I was shooting $10.99 a box American Eagle 50grain HP ammo. I was amazed with the results from just about the cheapest rifle,scope,ammo combo you can get. Yes the trigger is terrible but coyotes beware!
 
The Axis can be had for 350-400.... $475 seems a bit high. Check online prices at Cabelas or Wholesale sports. All the things I"ve heard about them are mainly positive. They seem to be a great and very accurate entry level rifle. Most complaints seem to be about stiff action, poor trigger and some stock flex. All have fixes on youtube. If you want to move up a bit the model 11/111 are the next in line. About 50-100 more in price. PS. don't buy the pkg axis buy it bare bones and buy a good quality optic to put on it the pkg scope are generally throw aways!!! my 2cents!!!

The last Axis I bought came without a scope. I put a Nikon Prostaff on it with steel weaver rings. It's still under five hundred bucks. Now if the snow would melt I could get out to the range and give it a whirl.

Axis 7mm-08 youth $223 plus tax and shipping about $280 (boxing day sale)
Nikon 3x7x32 $124 plus tax, bases $15 plus tax, rings $35 plus tax total about $193ish

An axis itself, without the scope, sometimes sells for $279.00 at WSS

The problem is that they usually only offer them in the fudd calibers, or they sell right out of the good stuff right away and all that's left is the junk like 243 and 22-250
 
DO NOT trade a Ruger GP100 for an Axis, they are completely different in price ranges. Sell the Ruger on the EE and buy the Axis from Cabelas or Wholesale Sports and have it shipped to you.
 
Yeah the revolver is worth 2 new Axis rifles if you just sold it on the EE

Somewhere in a crusty old gun shop, a fat fuddy guy wearing suspenders just got owned by the internets
 
Do not trade the Ruger for the Axis you are taking a bath on that deal if you do. Sell the Ruger( I'm sure you'll get sound advice for selling it on the EE here), buy an axis. ( Check Dantes Sports) as you can find one without a scope for under $300. Keep the difference for a good scope and ammo for the Axis. If you do want to trade do it here as you'll probably end up with a much nicer rifle.

The axis is accurate. Thats where the good things end. I had 2 sold one and am getting rid of the other one this summer. The trigger sucks so I put in timney($120), the stock flexes like someone at a body building competition. and they are ugly lol. Check out the EE there are alot of better rifles for sale. Also check out trade ex(there is a banner up top). Would I buy an axis again? No, after looking at some guns that are a couple hundred bucks more I would spend the extra and get something better if it must be new or get something used.

Edit: My blued axis xp came with a scope and was $329.
 
For the price, the Axis is a great package.

I have one in 22-250 and love it for coyote hunting. Is it a tack driving Tikka - no it is not; but what it is is an accurate, cheap(er) hunting rifle which I personally don't mind throwing on the wheeler or in a snowbank when out hunting.

I own much nicer rifles, but the Savage Axis has impressed me. If someone doesn't want to spend $1000 on a rifle/scope package; the Savage Axis should definitely be on the short list of options...

Well I picked up my new rifle Saturday. Once I held the Axis 243, I felt it was pretty cheaply made IMO. So got to talking with a few of the guys there and brought this home instead :)

Its a Savage 111 Trophy Hunter XP in the .270 Cal. It just felt sooooo much nicer than the Axis. Came with a better scope and includes the Accutrigger I keep hearing about. I also purchased the bi-pod and 40 rounds, So this weekend going coyote hunting with a buddy to try er out.

You could checkout the Marlin X7 and XS7 series rifles. They look pretty interesting. Has anyone had any hands-on experience with these rifles?
