Savage b.mag .17 Winchester Super Magnum

I'm torn between picking up a b mag or waiting for different models/manufacturer. The b mag is just so ugly and cheap looking. Any word from other manufacturers like CZ, or at least a nice laminate or wood stock with a heavy barrel on the savage and I'm in.

There was a post on rimfire central that cz was waiting to see if this asm went anyplace so maybe in a few years if its still around. They would have to use the 527 action or design a new action for this round as well.

Well, i see where your coming from, I will certainly get a better one once their available, and hand this one down to my Son..... or if boyd's comes out with a nice light thumbhole solution, simply re-stock it. But for the time being, I have one. ;-)

Tried mine out yesterday. Not overly impressed best I could do at 50 yards was 1-1/4 group. May be the rifle may be the ammo. The #### on close bolt was not hard to get used to, but the stock leaves lots to be desired.

Oh my, that's not very promising. Hopefully it's something simple like loose scope rings or your rail. I would expect that kind of group at closer to 200 yards.

Lots of that kind of thing going on. Been on rimfire central lately? Lots of the guns are getting sent back to salvage because they can't hit the barn you are standing in

Eek... Let's remember, the box of ammo says "Winchester" on it, and no rimfire ammo (with that name on it) has ever shot worth a damn in any of my guns. I believe Savage is capable of making crappy rimfires these days, but I don't think I'd gamble on an alternative/more expensive rifle until someone rules-out the ammo.

I'm disappointed that savage went with such a cheap rifle to debut the WSM. I would happily pay a few hundred dollars more for quality. Now sales are going to be crap weather its the ammo or not and no other manufacturers will get in the game. At least for the low price tag I'm still willing to take a chance and give it a shot. Hopefully I get an accurate one.

Im headed out right now to sight mine in, i properly free floated the barrel a couple days ago. I cleaned it, and it was dirty id say. I tightened the bases and mounted a Bushnel elite 4200 2.5-10x40. I have a box of the 20 gn im going to sight it in with..... be back in a bit to let y'all know how it went. :)

---edit.

well, im back. it was nice when i got home. Now its blowing out there like crazy. way too windy. I got 8 shots off non the less, and made a few adjustments. its shooting in the bull at 50 yards, so next time I have something to work with.

then I get home. I take the mag out just to inspect, clear everything. I go to pop it back in, and it wont go. there is an obstruction? i slide it back out and hear something clack on the floor and bounce. i look down and there is this small metal claw like thing. I pop the bolt out and its the flippin' extractor! I seen where it goes in the bolt and see just the spring there. Im thinking what holds this thing in? Is there something else missing? I pop the extractor back into the groove and it seats right in there, and is held in place, somehow. Its just the way it goes in there. It all seems to function alright.....

So, with that in mind, I'd say Savage has dropped the ball. They released this thing in the US MONTHS ago, and were told over and over there were issues, like the stock contacting the barrel, extractors, ect..... It doesnt look like they addressed any of these issues before releasing it in Canada?

ill have to wait till the weather gets better before I can really try it out I guess.

Even with all those problems they are still selling. If they sell why fix it. Let the customer find out its not right and have them either fix it or send it back.

Strikes me as a better .17 to have. Inexpensive brass and inexpensive, readily available dies, make it a bit better choice to me than the .17 Ackley Hornet or Ackley Bee. Factory ammo, too, if you use that.

By the time you buy the rimfire stuff, you are pretty much at or higher than, the cost of loading a Hornet sized round. .17 bullets are not so very cheap as the .22 ones, but about all you get from the factory ammo is a couple make/weight choices of bullets that are not otherwise sold.

When the .17 Mach2 was announced, I was pretty excited about it. The price of ammo, pretty much shot that to hell though. I'd rather reload and shoot something better for the same money.

Given the record of recalls on the few .17 cal semi-auto's that were out there, I don't see the big makers being all that enthused to go there again.

Cheers

Why Winchester developed the .17WSM then had Savage design such an entry level rifle, I can't fathom. Perhaps it's the popularity of el cheapo rifles that sell like hotcakes that inspired that decision? I read a lot of on-line reviews about the Bmag's short-comings (even picked up a box of 20gr ammo for myself) before I decided to roll the dice & give it a whirl. I plunked down the dough so mine's on route as we speak. Once I receive, inspect & put the Bmag through it's paces, I'll post my findings. I hope they'll be positive ones as some guy's are having very good results with their economical Savage .17 WSM (not just the "hired shooter" writers)

I have never paid more than $7 for a box of 50 cartridges for the 17mach2. Which centerfire can you reload for $7 per 50?
