Savage Edge reviews?

Perhaps Savage will make an Accutrigger and Accustock kit for this gun in the future......

I doubt it (unless something aftermarket comes out). I have a feeling that Savage got away from the original Stevens configuration because it was too close to their higher-end rifles, and therefore there was no reason to spend more than $300.00 to get an excellent gun.

I bought the FCXP3 package. It's a great gun for the money, but an accutrigger would be a great improvement.

It sounds like Marlin has turned the tables with its XS7/XL7 lineup, albeit so far without as many chamberings as can be found with the Savage/Stevens.

It pains me to see Savage go the way of the Remington 710/770 lineup for their economy-grade rifles. At least with the Savage 111/Stevens lineup, you were still getting a genuine Savage rifle equivalent to higher-end models, just without the nicer stock/trigger.

Hey,
I got my 223 yesterday. ( Edge )
258 $ brand new + Taxe&Shipping.
Keep in my mind its 258$, dont expect a Sako Deluxe.
Tomorrow, i'll try it ont the bench, today i break-it in with the usual 10 round.
with 3 reload receipe.
My quick review.
-14 inch length pull, way too long for me.
Already cut the stock of 3/4 inch, to shorten it its pain in the A..
The recoil pad is part ( glue ) of a sliding/clipping asset in the rear end of the stock.
had to cut everything, trim/adjust and glue it back iin place with Devcon.
-Finish : Parkerised, i call this ( tremclad ) finish.
-Action, Not bad at all, parkerised compound in the slide. it will be awesome in few weeks.
-Trigger: Very hard, a bit overtravel, but at least it break clean.
I already tune it, polish the sear, change the rear spring and adjust the overtravel.
now its perfect @ 2.5 pound.
-The stock is very simple, but i'm sure it do the trick. I did the bedding last night.
-the magazine, at this price i`m really impress, its working ! Hold 5 round of 223
feed perfectly, clip good, no problem right now, I think it will last a couple of year at least.

Next to follow tomorrow.

Extremely satisfied:
Waiting for my Nikon 4.5-14X + Rings,
I install a Leupold 2.5-8x on rings’ way too low, (had to shim the rings )
All 5 rounds groups
Fired ratherly fast.
First group of the day, first round is away of the group itself.

Worst

Best 5 round, Barrel very hot, i dont understand this one.

Guilty

Very windy as we are expecting a snowstorm, and still waiting for my scope ( 4.5-14X)
Like to shoot anyway,
All 5 rounds groups, and again this little rifle enjoy to shoot warm.

They do shoot nice don't they? So far I have only shot mine (223 rem) very informally (not off a solid bench) and I'm getting nice under 1" groups. Can't go wrong for the price.

got mine sighted in today, shooting 3/4" groups on average, but a couple were right around 1/2" @ 100yards. very impressed with this rifle.

I've got one in . 223
Trigger is heavy but it's a decent rifle for the price. Probably 1.5 moa without trying too hard.
I did have an extractor issue though. Shell was being dropped before ejected, so I often had to pick it out if the chamber. Called savage, and 3 days later had a new extractor assembly in my hands free if charge. Problem solved!

Okay guys, lets get back to some reviews. I don't think cost is the big issue here in and of itself. We can agree that the Edge is available for $X +/- $75.00 depending on where you shop. And at that price point (say $400 for arguement sake by the time tax & shipping gets on there and guaranteed I'll end up ordering some other item in camo while I'm at it!) I'm just interested in if I'm getting good value for my money or spend another 200 and get something better. From what I have read thus far it seems like a decent shooter and certainly good enough to take into the woods and slow a couple of coyotes down (or, in the right caliber a moose). I've been looking at getting one in .223 or 22-250 but can't seem wrestle the money from my wallet. I keep thinking that for a few more bucks I'll get a way better rifle from the EE or scope a Stevens 200 the way I want it.

Just a few random thoughts,

J

Hey Jet

I got the Edge cause it was cheap and I had read some good reviews.
If I could afford better I would get better. This Edge was for my 15 year old.
He got an Edge and 500 rounds of bulk 223, practice ammo. He will be a way better shot after
500 rounds though this gun than he would be if I got him a better gun and 50 rounds of ammo.
Most our shots will be under 300 yards here in southern ontario.
I know two people that have an Edge and they like them alot for the money.
You get what you pay for.

Good luck in your search.

I'm beginning to see the light. They must be a half decent rig as you don't see many up for sale either here or elsewhere. I agree that for less than 4 brown ones you'd be hard pressed to get anything in a centerfire scoped and all. I'd say add a bi-pod in with the order, and maybe a sunshade for the scope, and you're done. A buddy of mine has one and I believe the last I heard was the bolt was a little stiff or "notchy(?)" but I'm betting a few hundred rounds at the range will straighten and smooth that out. Is the newer, renamed Axis model equipped with better optics?

J

I thought the Axis was a completely different rifle from the Edge, but from comments here, it seems to be mainly a new name with minor changes. Anyone know for sure? I helped a young man sight in a scope on his Edge at the range yesterday. It was shooting one hole groups with the cheaper Winchester factory ammo. My 110 and 111 Savages are both excellent rifles but my Stevens was a disappointment. I'm tempted to try an Edge in .308 Win.

I own one in .308. Very nice shooting rifle I must say. The bolt and the trigger mechanism, however, are little more than a child's toy in design and function. My bolt torques up on the firing pin spring on closing and then springs back part way open and almost fully open when jiggled or bumped. Just ridiculously poor design IMO. If you want to see an embarassingly poor trigger assembly made from really cheap stamped parts with a cheap stamped 'ramp' of a sear, just open one up. I got exactly what I paid for. At risk of repeating myself, however, it does shoot very nice groups. As I said elsewhere earlier, it makes one wonder why this gun had such a short run before being reintroduced as the new 'Axis'. I just hope they have addressed some of these issues in the new iteration. IMO, once enough people figure out how vastly superior the Marlins are to the Savages, Cerberus can stop manufacture of these guns without anyone noticing. Yes, I own a Marlin so I know of what I speak.
