SAVAGE Firearms are garbage

I hate the mag release in the mk2. It seems like it was designed to be operated by your fingernail or something. The mag release on the 64 is much better and the magazines are made out of die cast aluminum. They sort of feel like an old school hot wheels car, and weigh about the same but they last forever
I had a 64, it was trash. Seriously have to remove the barrel to take out the bolt. So could do nothing but brake clean clean job. Trigger was heavy, accuracy ain't there.

Rather then making a affordable mdt stock for the more popular mk2.. They wasted money with precision 64 lol...

Had a few center fire savage rifles and they were all good and had good accuracy, still got one in 22 hornet
The ba stealth 6.5 creed one that I sold shot better then the bergara I bought to replace it with.
Same goes with the one I had in 223. Got a cz to replace the savage but that damn savage shot tighter groups
Never had a rimfire model though

Bought a savage Timberline, a more expensive rifle. It wouldn't chamber a round, the chamber was off centre and the rifling came right down to the case mouth on one side. It cycled very rough, a pin in the bolt head had not been driven all the way in. Also it had no primary extraction. I sent it in for warranty, they burrowed out the chamber so it would chamber a round and sent it back to me. They had shot it at the warranty center ant it passed their test, and it shot accurately when I got it back, but I could still see that the rifling started farther up the barrel on one side than the other by an obvious amount, like about 1/3 caliber. No mention from them about the extraction. When it came back it had the old style barrel nut so I could remove it and changed the barrel. I have 3 older savage 110 rifles which are great guns I admire their cost quality balance they are well made and even the barrel interiors look way better than modern savage barrels. Why is that silly bottom release made of plastic on an expensive rifle.Today's savage is garbage

I found that to be the case with my adventure also. When I first got into guns, savage was all the rage and I picked a bunch of them up in various cals. Never had one that did not shoot well. I got more into the hobby, bought "nicer" guns with better materials, ergos, feel ect... Some shot better, most didnt. Lol

Till I got to tikka. Out class the savage in every way. Fit finish feel and accuracy.

Only savage I bought was a 110 scout in 308. Stock and sights were awesome.
It's accuracy/consistency was horrendous and every 2 to 3 shots the bolt would lock up and not let me cycle. I would have to attempt to cycled well over 20 times before it would finally release and cycle a round.
After a month of no response from Savage I sold it for about 40% of what I paid with full disclosure.
I will never buy another savage rifle.... RIFLE!

That being said I got a brand new renegauge for 60% off so figured **** it, I'll try it. It's a semi, a shotty, and its been nearly a decade so hopefully things have improved. But I expect the worst ha!

Ok, while we are crapping on Savage, I will repeat my experience with a 300 WM Savage 110. It was consistent, but consistently bad. First shot close to centre of target, good enough for a shot at 100 yards (but why would I need a 300 WM for that), next shot high, third shot even higher. I ended up having Dennis Sorenson replace the barrel, and that fixed it. Clearly a lemon.

There seems to be two camps with Savage.

1) Savage sucks. Period.
2) they ugly, but they work.

There are definitely downsides. The axis has stupidly heavy bolt lift for example, the plastic stocks leave a lot to be desired, some of their magazines are dog####, but if all you're interested in is accuracy for cheap, it's hard to go wrong with a Savage.

I think this is a good take.

The majority are exceptionally accurate. Problems are common. They are cheap.

By contrast, Rugers are generally more money but still pretty cheap. And every single one I have owned has worked properly AND been really accurate. Seems like a better deal to me but everyone's mileage varies.

The "Cheap" Savages - A22s incl - are just that; you get what you pay for. Even my 64 plinker is better than the A22 "I used to have"; my B22-FV shoots under MOA at 50-y and 1.5 at 100-y with a 6-24x50-FFP Covenant and my Sav-12 FV in 308 w-HS Precision Stock is under 2MOA at 200. Scope is an old Vortex 4.5-20x44 SFP-BDC.

ATRS makes a metal magazine release for the Savage MK II. It's actually very nice!....:)

If I can find the link, I will post it here. They work very well!:D

Ungrateful, I 'fixed' my mag release on my 64s by drilling a small hole and putting a piece of 'coat-hanger' in to extend them. On one I covered it with JB-weld in pic; the other I just 'curled into a hook. I just sold that one this summer and No pics. And as you see, I 'relieved' the mag-well lips to make insertion easier. I also polished 'Everything that rubs anything' in the action, replaced the trigger-return spring with ca 1/3 of a bic spring stretched to fit in place and replaced the Sear-spring with an MCarbo one from their 64 spring-set. The other springs were not needed, as the pull is now ca 1.5# ! I get 2-3MOA with a cheap red-dot, it's not a target rifle.

I do agree with the majority of statements from everyone above.

However:

My wife's entire selection of firearms are all Savage branded. They all are accurate, reliable, great looking, and sweet shooters. Now did we have some small but annoying warranty issues with parts? Yes we did. But back then getting parts from Savage Canada was easy peesy. Today dealing with Savage USA is another story. I'm currently waiting for some Savage warranty parts on two different rifles. Been eight months now and I guess I will have to escalate these issues up the food chain. And yes I've been patient, very professional and nice about it thus far.......:(

When I had my Pro Shop in Cranbrook BC, I sold approximately 1200 firearms per year. 500 of them were Savage branded. The obvious reason for this is they were reasonably priced to buy. Or at least they were in those days. I have been retired 18 months now.

The other contributing factors to my Savage sales being so high was, I was a recognized Savage Gold Dealer. Which means I sold over 500 Savage brand guns per year and I had over 350 Savage guns in stock. We all remember the Covid-19 Scam days, well guns were not easy to obtain or keep in stock. However, Savage rifles were. And the last factor was Savage guns were, accurate, reliable and shot very well.

I'm in no way disputing the issues that other members have stated above, I too have seen this, and experienced this. But there are some very good Savage rifles out there as well.

I totally understand the frustration with all the Savage issues people are experiencing. To label them as junk, well is a little harsh and not entirely accurate. Their AccuTrigger is very nice, my wife and I love them. Others, not so much. But that again is okay and personal preference.

I had more Chiappa warranty issues per sales numbers than any other firearm period. Even more than Savage. Does this make them junk? Well maybe in my opinion, however I have sold some really nice sweet working little Chiappa rifles as well. Go figure!:ROFLMAO:
