Ok, I've got smaller hands. So, I'm trying to figure out the best way to reduce the distance between the thumb hole to the trigger (marked as "A" in the photo).

I figure I have two options:

1) Sand the wood where my thumb pad meets the grip. But I'm not sure about the finish on this stock and what I would have to do to it so that it doesn't look like it was sanded down...

2) Move the trigger back. Not sure if this is possible on the Savage. I could adjust this length of pull on my Walther GSP in a few seconds... but I don't see this possible on the Savage. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Anyone know what the best way to achieve my goal?

Thanks

Oh boy. I would maybe try sanding it if it is unbearable the way it is. Just go very, very slowly. I have one of these and I absolutely love it. Even with the cheap stuff it pounds gophers all day.

I too love my Savage MARK II BTVS. Amazing quality and finish, not to mention accuracy and reliability. I've got the trigger worked down to about a pound. The only small thing that bugs me a bit is the reach to the trigger. I've had the gun for many years and have no real problem with adjusting my hand position... but, if I could modify it slightly to accommodate my hand...well then it would be perfect!

Thanks,

If you do sand it down, (and that's totally acceptable,it's your rifle make it comfortable for you!) then you may have to sand the whole stock once you get it where you want and pick your own finish, as I imagine it will be hard to match what Boyd's uses.

I wouldn't risk ruining it. Sell it, and buy another rimfire that fits you better.
I also own a BTVS, just like yours, and I wouldn't ever consider screwing with the thumbhole stock. I made sure it fit me well in the store before I brought it home.

don't sand it, don't alter it, don't change anything on the gun.

change your GRIP. don't stick your thumb into the thumbhole, just grip the front part of the grip with your fingers, rest your palm on the side, let the thumb rest upwards along the side of the stock, and when you fire you gently pull straight back.

hmm... i'll try to get a pic of how i do it on my TRR. and since this is a 22LR, i don't grip the stock hard, and when i pull the trigger back i almost move my entire hand as one 'unit'. my shoulder braces the gun nicely and keep it stable, so it's not an issue - and it lets me have a nice smooth straight light touch.

Adjust it however you want, it's just wood. I would, as already mentioned by TG, sand the whole stock down and just refinish the whole thing to your liking. Nothing is better than shooting a gun that fits you perfectly:). If you are worried about refinishing try spray bed liner for the black gun look, it makes a very nice, super durable textured finish just like the TR stock above. I would use a rasp and then sandpaper as it takes a lot of work to remove a noticable amount of wood with just sandpaper.

This was a stock 10/22 stock before I modded it.

elimsprint that's nice work. Any pics with the metal installed?

I think I'd be hesitant to spray the BTVS stock black but that's just me, I like the laminate look.

You're right, it's his stock and he can do whatever he wants to it. I just found, never having used a thumbhole stock before, that it took a while for me to figure out MY grip with it.

Now that I have, I wouldn't change it.

I just mentioned the bedliner as an option if the OP was not comfortable in doing a total/partial clear wood finish after the mods. Here's a couple of shots of the gun. It needs a new finish as I had a friend up a couple of weeks ago and whatever sunscreen he was using when we were shooting softened the paint (spray trunk liner from CT) I had on there. I think it may get bedlinered after I sandblast the old finish off.

aikidoforever,
Do the mods and don't worry about wrecking anything. If you do make a mistake just patch it up with bondo and try again. While you are at it maybe add some finger indents in the grip. And really, worse comes to worse, a new stock is only $100 from boyds ht tp://www.boydsgunstocks.com/product.htm?pid=9755&cat=1217 .

Finger indents I added to an Anshutz stock

You do realize that just removing wood from the rear is not going to lessen the distance your trigger finger has to stretch, it will only lessen the amount your thumb needs to stretch around the grip. I too have small hands and have fiddled with grip position/trigger finger stretch all my life. You might find that you want to move the whole grip forward so you will need to add wood or bondo to the front and grind/rasp/sand wood from the rear to move your whole hand forward a bit. It doesn't take much to feel a huge change and it is worth the effort for sure.
