Savage Mark II FV Heavy Barrel for long range

Good day to all,

I currently own a Marlin 795 and I will sell it.

I would like to buy a 22 bolt action for long range target shooting (100 y to 300y).

It has to be under 500$CAD to qualify for the "Canadian Rimfire Series" competitions in the "Production" category.

I was looking for a Savage Mark II FV Heavy Barrel.

I already have a good Bushnell scope.

Do you think it's a good choice for that ?

Considering your budget choices, it may be as good as you can expect if you're looking to buy new. You might find something else on the EE if it doesn't have to be new.
What specific scope is your Bushnell?

A key thing to keep in mind in competitive shooting with .22LR at 100 to 300 yards is that ammo quality plays a very big role. Bulk ammo will not do it.
 
Ive shot mine out to 300 yards. However its in an mdt lss chassis andvwears an 8-32x50 30mm scope. Cci standards can get me to 100 fine. After that i switch to eley
 
Yep, that's probably your best choice in the price range. We used to shoot our .22s out to 400m with bulk at 1'-0" square plates with some success; the biggest problem was finding a consistent aim point as your scope will be long out of adjustment before you get anywhere close to that range and even with your magnification backed all the way out you'll still be using the post lined up on the top of some tree on the horizon.
 
Sighted in for 100m, you will need 75 moa to go to 400m

For those trying this in Imperial sighted in at 100y, you will need 65 moa to go to 400y.

With target sights on my BSA Martini I needed 40 moa to go from 100m to 300y.

75 moa is a tonne of elevation!
 
I was at the CRPS shoot this weekend in Petawawa, the winner of the open division used a Savage MKII, he had it in a MDT chassis and had a Gen II Razor, but the basic rifle was just a Savage MKII. So it must be a decent shooter if the pros are using it.

Would that be enough ?

I was looking at the new Bushnell Engage maybe... I also need to keep in ming the max 500$ for the scope.
 
You do not need 24X, and in fact in that price range I would definitely recommend against it. For that much magnification you need decent glass to make use of it, otherwise it is useless. I used a Razor 5-20 and the entire time I was on 12-15X max to keep the field of view wide enough because some of the stages have you transitioning from one target to the next and you need more field of view to know where you are going. For the $500 price point look at the Cabelas Covenant scopes, I have never looked through one but I am hearing decent reports about them and the price is right it seems.
 
simmons 6x24 44 mm just over 200 bucks mil dot sun shade and side parallax have one myself ... not a razor however it works well ,,, and not a grand to buy

There is a good article on the CRPS website talking about what to look for in a scope. The Bushnell banner is a good hunting scope but for this "long range" type of application, having target turrets are ideal.

My friend used his Remington 597 HB AND A BUSHNELL banner. He found it was difficult to keep track of his turret adjustments during the stages.

If you are to use your scope, make sure you lear n you "mechanical zero". This is the amount of MOA or clicks from the absolute bottom of your scopes elevation travel.

That way if you get lost along the way, you can always find your way back to zero.

Also a ballistic app on your phone helps a great deal.

Mine started as a plastic stock FV... found it very accurate with SK rifle match. The plastic stock was too short and the drop too much so I swapped in a Boyds pro varmint stock

Now I am in open so have mounted an Athlon Ares BTR 4.5-27... all the features you would want for the PRS type game, solid optics, rock solid tracking and return to zero... way over the production price limit.... but it works.

I think the $500 limit really is too low given our crappy exchange rate, for all the features shooters would want BUT some are using scopes that fit in this price range and hopefully, will report how the optics hold up.

The limit for rifles is not as big a problem.. lots of functional options. Beyond the stock ergonomics and fit, the barreled action from a few manfs will work just fine... with the right type of match ammo.

so if you like the Savage mkII, go for it. Works for me.

Rifles to consider include Savage MkII and B22, Ruger American rimfire, CZ452 - Bruno #4, CIL/Anschutz variants if they come with det mag. Lots of good options

I have a preference for these scopes:


VORTEX VIPER 6.5-20X 44MM PA (discontinued model, saw it on sale at 469$)

BUSHNELL ENGAGE 6-18X 50MM (331$)

BUSHNELL PRIME 6-18X 50MM (409$)



Any toughs ?
