I love this little rifle, I only paid about 130$ for it and its been some of the best fun on camping trips.

Recently I've been noticing some issues with it however.

-Doesn't extract a live shell
When a round is inserted, even a CB Long which is shorter than the regular .22LR the round becomes stuck in the chamber. Only after its fired does it easily come out with the regular operation of the bolt.
I've noticed that one of the dual extractors, the one on the opposite side of the ejection port is not a sharp edge like the one nearest to the ejection port. Is this normal?

-When loading a round, sometimes it gets hung up and/or scrapes one side of the bullet heavily.
I feel this is effecting accuracy. When the round is slightly hung up I pull it out and the top of the round is scraped off from the top of the chamber, like its doing a nose dive upwards. This happens at any time and seems to be intermittant, the mags are brand new savage 10 rounders. Anyone else have this problem?

Just kind of annoing when your running through rounds rapidly to have one get crushed or hung up on the upper chamber wall.

Its only a 130$ rifle but I just want to get a feel to see if this kind of issue is happening with other users and its normal, or if indeed my rifle has an issue.

If anyone else has a mark II can they check the bolt face where the extractors lie, and tell me if their extractor opposite of the ejection port is just as sharp and pointy as the one on the right? Maybe I broke mine...

Just had a quick look at mine. The extractor opposite the ejection port is not like the other. It is not near as pointy, seems more rounded.

please check if chamber is clean. My MkII has no issues but one of target pistols with somewhat tighter chamber does the same thing. It usually happens after 200-some rounds when chamber gets fouled or rather lands get dirty or maybe leded.

Issue with scraped/failed to chamber rounds sounds like magazine problem. Mags theselves maybe nice and new but somehow they do not sit high enough anymore. Try pressing mag up and cycle - see if you notice improvement or smoother feed. Usually feeding issues when they are intermittent best checked while feeding in slow motion. Being slow usually amplifies th issue and makes it more visual.

cday, thanks for checking, looks like the bolt is normal.

22lr, thanks for that advice, I'll check that out immediately but I'm not to sure whats the best way to clean a .22LR chamber.

I've only ever cleaned this gun with CLP and a bore snake, I've shot less than 2000 rounds through it so far. Most of the time its two passes with the snake by itself but once in a while I'll soak the chamber with CLP and do a few wipes.

Would you guys recommend anything else?

The magazine does sit kind of loose, I'll have to take it apart and see how the magazine is held in and see if I can have it sit in there a little tighter.

I cleaned mine 2-3 times first when I got it 6000-7000 rounds ago, it won't be cleaned anymore now until groups start to open up. I shot a couple groups a few days ago measuring .202, and .205, so no cleaning yet, lol.

You may have to bend the clip/spring that holds the extractors. I've heard of people having to do this with the Savage mark II's. There should be a few threads on the topic on rimfirecentral. There are also threads over there on how to tune the mag if having feed problems.

to clean chamber you will have to use brass brush and some kind of bore cleaning solvent. Pull bolt out and clean from the breech.

Those two issues - feeding/scraping bullets and chamber fouling with led scrapes go together it seems. Fix feeding problem and you may never have to clean chamber again.

Savage Mark II problems

.
First...you say that it is shaving bullets. Some lead from these could have entered the chamber, thus making it a bit shorter. Solution--brass brush and clean the chamber well.

Second.....Shaving bullets can be caused by a loose fitting magazine. You are using a 10 round one.......have you tried it with 5 round magazines? The 10 round one, being longer, allows more leverage from side to side.

Three.....Extraction. When the spring clip is taken off.......if you are not careful you can stretch or bend it out of shape. The right hand extractor is the sharp pointed one, and the left hand extractor is more rounded. This left hand extractor allows the rim of the cartridge to release on the left side of the cartridge while the right side still holds it. When the bolt is moved back the left side of the cartridge case contacts the ejector, the case rim is forced past the left extractor while it is still held by the right extractor, and the case is ejected.

Four.....a weak or bent ejector spring. This spring holds the left and right extractors, and the firing pin. If you take these apart, when reassembling them put the firing pin in first, then the spring. Then insert the extractors one by one under the spring, pushing them rearward.

Five.....When putting the spring in the bolt, make sure the small notches in the sides of the spring are to the REAR.

I just picked up a Savage Mark II Heavy Barrel for 230 dollars. I am wondering where you got one for 130... and if they have a price for a heavy barrel synthetic stock..

As far as the shaved bullets, its from the 10 shot magazines. I have the 5 shot magazine that the gun came with, and two savage 10 shot magazines. The spring tension in the 10 shot mags is far greater than the 5 shot, so I found some objects that fit nicely into the 10shots and I am hoping they will compress the spring a bit...

I suppose thats not a solution though, as the shaving is coming from the bottom of the bolt passing over the top round in the mag, and with greater spring tension on the 10 shot mags, it shaves a lot worse than the 5 shot.

I can post a picture of my shaven rounds.

Am I the only one who thinks that sounds dirty?

Any gunsmiths advice on sanding the front bottom edge of the bolt so that it glides over the next round in the magazine, instead of shaving it?

Lack of extraction I have found is normally caused by el cheapo ammunition.
