Hello,

I picked up a Mark II f in January, and I'm wondering if it's normal to get 1 inch groups at 100 yards? I've shot possibly every type of bulk ammo I can find, and none have come close to the amazing CCI Blazer. I'm getting groups of 0.8-2.0 inches. The random flier is what's causing me grief, and I guess it's because I'm not using target ammo. I tried the Eley stuff, and it was alright, but I wouldn't plink with it.

I have a Tasco Varmint 6-24x44 scope installed, with a harris bipod. The adjustable trigger is set to 2lbs, so the break is clean. The bolt on the gun is smooth, better than any other 22 I've encountered other than a CZ.

I'm really curious if I got a good gun, or if they all typically shoot well? I paid only $199.99 for it, $100 for the scope, $15.00 for the mount, and $70 for the bipod. I'm into this thing for only $385 (less than CZ455) and I find it going to the range with me more than any other gun I own.

A few quick questions:

* How often should I clean this? I don't want to destroy my waxy buildup in the rifle but I want to get the carbon fouling out. I'm only pulling a dry patch through every range trip, but I plan on doing 50 strokes with copper brush and hoppes every 3-4 bricks (or when accuracy suffers, whichever comes first).

* Can the bolt be hard cycled like an Enfield? I noticed a bit of wear on the bottom part of the bolt. It's so smooth, it just wants to be beat around.

* Has anyone found ammo that shoots better than Blazer? I tried 16 different types and the only that came close were other CCI brands.

Thanks for the help!

Sounds about right

I have a Mark II GL that I am very happy. I would say that it is a 1 moa rifle as I can hit a 1 inch iron target at 100 yards with reasonable consistency using a Bushnell Trophy 3-9X. My Mark II also loves Blazers, its basically I all shoot now as it give me great accuracy for 6 cents/round (before taxes). From personal experience and what I've read on here I'd say that Mark IIs are general very accurate our the box and probably offers the best bang for your buck (no pun intended) on the Canadian markets. I'm not a big fan of the factory iron sights but that doesn't matter once you mount your scope :D

I don't care if the iron sights aren't super, so long as the rifle has them. The only problem I'm seeing is the weaver mounts I have make it impossible to use both at the same time. If anyone knows a way around this, I'd really appreciate the info.

1moa .22lr with a cheap scope, using cheap ammo, sounds alright to me.

WHAT! 1/2 MOA is alright. 1 MOA sucks! The OP should just sell me that MKIIF and scope for $200 shipped and insured.:)

Well, that is what my MKIIF cost (with a Bushnell 3-9 x 32AO and rifle case) on the EE, so I ain't offering more. :):):)

Seriously, though, you can get see-through dovetail rings, but you have to remove your weaver scope mounts. PM me if you want me to send you pictures.

Everyone has different tastes, but i find the see-through bases and rings to be mostly worthless. The scope sits too high to be comfortable and the sight picture is too small to use the iron sights effectively.

My father's 30/30 has decent see through rings. OK scope picture(slightly to high) and easy iron sight picture. Like the ones on ebay there, but they seemed to be lower, flatter base.

Ugh my rings are caught up in the postal strike backlog, hopefully by next weekend I'll have pictures up.

At least I'll be able to clean under the mount when I take them off, I try doing that at least once a year.

I love my Mark II BV. I had a third kid in Feb or I'd be out there shooting it right now. :(

Anywho, I believe that the heavy barrel Savage line with accu-trigger will turn in around 1 MOA or slightly over with average ammo, if shot by a competent shooter. Add more money for better ammo and your groups will drop. However, I know that when I'm turning in 1 and 1/4" groups with winchester Super X that I'm shooting pretty well. Could I spend twice as much on the ammo and get my groups around .75"? Probably. Will I? Maybe someday, but so far, around 1" at 100 yards is fine with me. It's nice to outshoot guys at the club using center fires with my 22. :D

I too bought a Savage this spring and love shooting it! I found the cheap ammo is the best American Eagle gets me 1/2" group at 50yrds.

The savage's are great. I love mine. Currently finding what ammo works best. So far the American Eagle is the best of the bulk ammos that I have tried. Average about 3/4" at 50 yards, usually with some wind. I would love to find a perfectly calm day to try it out.

This sounds like my MkIIF. Paid $168 (Baron had a Boxing Day sale). Great accuracy/buck ratio. My only complaint is the occasional tendency to misfeed. Oddly, it shoots cheapassed Winchester Xpert22's very well, but it doesn't feed them well.

Have a look at your bolt face. Mine will tend to build up some carbon after about 150 shells and the ejector hook and the other little hook that hold the shell in place on the bolt sometimes get a little gummed up and won't grab the rim of the cartridge. A quick brushing with an old toothbrush and its gtg again.

I would like to know if there is any appreciable diference in accuracy between the basic savage mk2 and the more expensive heavy barrel models with better stocks.I like the look of the thumbhole laminate models-but do they shoot any better?
