Savage Mkii Extraction Issues

The extraction problem is common for Savage rifles for sure. But it's not like it isn't there for Ruger Bolt actions as well. Cold weather, waxy lube, and dirty Chambers will all contribute to the problem recurring regardless of the action used.

I agree it's frustrating absolutely, but I think going through the hassle of trading in your rifle and finding a similar problem with a Ruger would be more frustrating. The only difference is with the Ruger you have more aftermarket support to help resolve the issue.

To each their own. I have had nothing but problems with Ruger all of which required paying more money to fix. After market trigger, extractors, firing pins, magazine catch springs, barrels the list goes on. With Savage the problems Ive had have been fairly easily resolved with some minor bush league gunsmithing.

You buy a mass produced rifle based on it's low cost and you get a mass produced rifle that was built to tolerances allowed by the cost.

I get your point, but I've had nothing but good experiences with Ruger. My 1022 works great. My mini 14 I had I loved, only sold it due to financial reasons. And everybody else I know that has or had a Ruger has never had an issue. I've only had problems with my Savages. I personally just trust their products more. That's why I am thinking of trading it in. I realize their still not top line, but I feel they're still built to a better quality is all.

Good thread. I’ve had the same problem with my MKII. Thanks for the problem solving tips.

To the OP: not sure what kind of shooting you’re doing but for the price Savage offers excellent accuracy. I’d be curious to know your thoughts with the Ruger American. I’ve never held one but for the price point I suspect it won’t be build much better than the Savage. If you’re really after quality give the T1X a try.

Contact Savage Canada.. they sent me a kit with new extractors and spring. The new springs was much stiffer then the factory one. Has worked great for a year, but I just doubled up to see how it would work. Had to enlarge the slot a bit on the 2nd spring.

The new spring made it stiffer and operation has been great. Doubling up makes it stiffer still and seems to function just fine. NO change in cycling the bolt.

I am very happy with the operation once fixed

Jerry

PS, no issues wrt to extractor cut and my chamber.

I've called multiple times and left messages with no answer/reply. So far Savage Arms Canada kinda sucks.

Thanks, I really appreciate it, but I'm just fed up with bad guns from the factory. This is the second savage I have owned and both had issues. I have issues with other companies as well. Build quality has just gone out the window for the past while....

I have owned several Rugers, and I have been happy with them all. My 1022 has had thousands of rounds through it with only the odd issue, which was crummy ammo related. I think I'll just be sticking with the companies I have had good luck with. Ruger is one of them, so I think a trade in is best for me at this point.

I had a brand new Ruger screw up right out of the box a few years ago . it was sent away and it got fixed and has been working fine since . $600 plus dollars and I was pissed . look at the cars on the road nowadays . I have seen people with problems from the get go . and your talking tens of thousands . as the Gentleman at Mystic Precision said he was sent new springs and all is fine . try to fix it if you feel so inclined .I'm probably a 10 to 20 minute drive from your place . I wouldn't steer you wrong . the savage 22 rifles work fine . yours just needs a little tweaking. things just aren't built the same anymore .

I have had problems with Ruger's as well. I bought the 10/22 tactical for my son. Not the bull barrel one, the other tactical that had the flash hider on the regular barrel. After 50-75 shots though it, the flash hider fell off. The threads had stripped off the barrel and wouldn't stay attached. The trigger's were absolute junk, feeding issues, although extraction was never an issue, just the bolt closing fully even after a full clean and VERY light lube with oil. It shot great after those issues were fixed.
The only issue I've ever had with my Remington 597 was a broken bolt hold open spring. quick and easy fix. I did have one issue with he bolt not going in to battery but that was a dirty chamber after close to 10,000 rounds without cleaning.
Ruger American 22-250 with ejection problems.
The two savages I've had have both been good, but these issues can and will come up with every manufacturer. It will be cheaper to just fix this issue rather than just pass the problem on to someone else.

That being said, if you really want to ditch this "defective" 22, I'll give you $50 for it, lol.

I have the same issue with my Mark II. I just took the stock off to see what I needed. It's real easy to pop the barrel off. Punch out 2 pins and loosen a screw with a hex. Probably what, 15 minutes of work from start to finish with nothing more than a hammer, a punch, a hex wrench, and a small file. I have a tiny metalworking bit with a flat nose for my dremel that fits just about perfectly that I'll use to sharpen the cuts a touch (hand filing, not with the dremel).

I'd assume you only need to remove a very tiny amount. I'm gonna file the cone a bit then test it. I don't wanna remove too much.
