Savage Package scopes

I have one (soon to be for sale) and it's a Simmons.

Mine has a Simmons 8-point 3-9x40. Not the best by far, but it gets the job done, and at a very good price.

Mine ML-II came with one of those. I had it replaced under warranty when the reticle came loose after 1 or 2 shots. Even the rings they use are complete junk. I had the screw threads pull out from recoil after a few months. I'd buy it without the scope if I was doing it again.

So the general consensus is.. for a centerfire rifle that I will want decent accuracy out of, I'm better off buying my own scope and rings?

What company makes these? Are they made by savage themselves, and are they worth the <$100 extra?

An extra $100 gets you a scope + rings + bases?

That alone should pretty much address any expectations that you may have about the quality of the package optics. As long as it gets you out on the weekends, and a critter in the freezer in November...its all good.

Those package scopes will be "O.K" if the caliber of gun you buy is .243 or less, but , cmon, any decently recoiling rifle (especially the 6 or 7 lb) savages, will most likely shoot the reticles loose on these, and you'll be left with a feeling that you can't shoot worth a crap. NEVER buy a scoped gun package, unless you just love chucking out 100 bucks out the window. You WILL have to replace the scope/rings , just as well to do it at the start, or you risk the scope failing at the worst time...................on your hunt.

I have a savage 111 that came with the Bushnell sharpshooter (they no longer come with Simmons as Bushnell bought simmons).

I've put probably around 80 rounds through it (.270). And it's still holding together very well.

Very accurate too. Surprisingly, can't complain!

There are certainly some of these scopes that will hold up to recoil, but its a crap shoot really. Most , if not all, of these scopes are just a "stop-gap" solution. But, why buy one when you can put that saved money towards a scope that will last, have clearer glass, smoother operation, and far more reliable functioning. Putting any scope worth 50-75 dollars on a hard recoiling rifle will net you results that are predictable. I say that if the rifle is upwards of .270win in the recoil department , its not a matter of IF the scope will fail, its more a matter of WHEN its gonna give up the ghost.

Hey guys,

I'll be joining the precision rifle world in a week or two and I happened to find a good deal.. or what seems like one.

Savage 10FCP HS Precision, with Bushnell 4200 6-24x50 Tactical, Luepold PRW Rings, & Burris Extream Tactical Bases. Also has a Caldwells 9-13" Pivot bipod.
All for about $2000. Sound like a good deal, or is this a crap Savage rifle/scope package? It's all brand new of course

Thanks,

Brandon
