Savage Precision Target Actions... Are they worth it?

Hi Everyone...

I'd like some help with a decision...

I'm looking to upgrade my Savage... It is currently a 12FV (.223) that has a Bell and Carlson Medalist stock on it...

I was thinking of upgrading the barrel to a faster twist and match grade, but then got thinking... should I upgrade the action at the same time?

(Ideally, the Savage LRPV single shot would come with a right port/right bolt, and the decision would be easy)

I was thinking of getting one of the new precision target actions, in a right bolt/right port configuration (I'm not sure I like the left port), in a single shot... my question, then, is:

Will the precision target action (in a single shot, smaller ejection port, target accu-trigger) make that big of a difference over a standard savage action that can be "accurized"?

I'd like to stay with .223, but shoot heavier bullets.

Thanks
EB

Where did you purchase your B & C Medalist stock from? Are you pleased with this stock? I am thinking of adding one to my Model 12 FVSS. Thank you for your time.

Chizzy

I have an LRPV Repeater, and I bought it for the stock and action (Precision Repeater not available yet). As Jerry said the action won't make as much difference as a good barrel, and I was fully aware of that when I purchased it.

The main reason I went with the LRPV was I think it looks cool, and I would like to make a switch barrel off this action. Other than the cool factor, you could probably talk to the right people and make the rifle you have now more accurate than a stock LRPV could be.

Short answer NO.

The barrel will improve your performance far more then the single shot action.

Jerry

Thanks for the input so far...

so let's assume the barrel is changed out...

Now if we just look at the precision action versus the action that I have now, but "accurized" (both with a new barrel)... now, is there enough of a difference between the two actions to justify the purchase?

NO.

The reg action and target action are essentially the same. There is no gain in rigidity as the reg. action is plenty solid. All the other components are identical save for the pull on the Accutrigger.

If you like the ease of feeding from a solid bottom action, just glue in one of the Score hi BR followers I am offering and problem solved.

The only real benefit is if you want a different port style like RB/LP or the dual port. More for functionality then accuracy.

Hi Jerry,

Thanks for the info...

as always... you seem to be a real wealth of knowledge!

Do you think much work would need to be done to a Savage action to gain the most possible accuracy out of it? Or could I just replace the barrel and be ready to go for next spring?

I have not done a thing to the half dozen actions I have rebarreled. Some more then once. Never did a thing to any of those that I shot with factory barrels either.

All have shot as well as I would expect from the barrel and chambering.

The level of performance has been as accurate as shooting in the 1's with the occasional group that measured in the 0's at 300m. Most of my projects with top BR quality barrels are shooting in the 2's at 300m ie sub 1" 5 rd groups in good conditions.

Considering that I am likely the limiting factor, I consider this level of performance from untouched actions excellent.

Could it be improved? Not sure as I am unable to consistently shoot better at that distance.

At 200yds, 1's and 2's are the norm IF using a good barrel. I don't bother testing much at 100yds as it doesn't show me what I want to learn about my LR performance.

The lugs have lots of contact (you can see the wear). The fired brass show zero runout and stay true. There is little issue with case growth using sane pressure loads. Extraction works although you may get the occasional 'lazy' extractor (some were soft and wore quickly).

I would polish the camming surface in the bolt ramp to reduce bolt lift and of course whatever trigger adjustment you want. Beyond that, I see no point.

I have taken one barrel and swapped it between THREE actions. Actions including 2 stevens and 1 savage made over a number of years. The same accuracy from each action and there were no changes in the fired cases.

I figure that is true enough for me. My goal is to try and figure out how the US shops are getting the bolt lift lighter. Mine are decent but still need some force to work. Would be nicer if it lifted lighter.

I would appreciate knowing the best way to go about this please Jerry?

Agreed, they could be lighter. If you ever find out the secret let us know, I, for one, would gladly pay to have my actions lightened.
