Savage Rascal problems

So I received the rifle back from Savage today, it was only gone 9.5 business days...RMA slip said they replaced the bolt assembly. and test fired 20 rounds with no failures. The firing pin is definitely narrower...

I just want to say Savage Canada (Lakefield) really impressed me with their customer service and RMA process...I would not hesitate to buy another Savage Rifle...

^this is good news. I'm sure that little rifle will serve the family perfectly now.

I wouldn't exactly be singing praises to the warranty department untill you take the rifle out to the range and test it yourself with variety of different ammo

Mine fails to fire about 1 in 4 with CCI quietes, we lift the bolt handle and back down and it always fires. I tried calling Savage, and only got voice mail everytime. Never received a call back so I gave up. I will try to clean the bolt more, maybe put a spacer in the spring to make it stronger. If you file the pin, where do you file, so it strikes the rim or more towards the center.

look at post #8 there is pictures in that post that show cases with both a factory firing pin and a filed down pin strikes . All you are doing is filing down the sides so the pin is thinner

My 5 year old daughter has a rascal and it has had zero issues with ammo (only use subsonic). But I got her a tiny reflex sight for it and I went to mount it on the front base but it was tapped WAY off, so I mounted it on the rear and it was fine. I should return it to savage, I messaged them but they don't reply.

that's strange...I emailed them, and they got back to me the next day...I will reply to my POC at Savage and find out what the deal is....right now I'm going to measure the firing pin width

so the width of the firing pin in the new bolt assembly is about .046" or roughly 1.15mm...when I dig out my DSLR, i'll post some pictures of the bolt face...I don't have a macro lens, but it should be better than a point and shoot.

Try different ammo. I had a box of 555's from Walmart that didn't cycle my semi's, but work's great in the bolt gun's.

Hmmmmm, I filed mine to about half that. Oh well. It's still slightly wider than some 22's I have!

There is one roll pin holding the firing pin in. Once that it's removed, file away. I'm not aware of a video, but then, I never looked. The file I used is very fine and I took a little bit at a time off both sides. Hang on a sec and I'll take a pic showing the pin for ya.

Well, I was going to send mine back to Savage but they weren't going to offer free shipping, so Reliable Gun (where I bought the Rascal), said they would fix the pin for $20. Done. I took the Rascal out to the range today and ran 100 cheap Wildcats through it without one FTF.

Reliable has a bunch of these in stock, in various colours. If people are going to order them for Xmas, I would suggest you just pay the extra $20 up front and have the pin filed down so you have a good little shooter right out of the box.

Having to pay an extra $20 to file a firing pin on a new rifle just sounds so absurd.

Savage should step up to the plate and toss the kibble to the gun shops or send
new adjusted firing pins to the dealers.

Heck, Winchester had a recall on firing pins years ago and owned up to it.

I'll bet that most of the people with light strikes failed to take the bolt completely apart, clean all the packing grease out and reassemble properly lubed.

In my case you'd be 100% wrong. Took it apart twice, both times it was spotless with just the lightest amount of oil where it needed to be. The third time it came apart, the files came out.

I've seen this same light strike problem. The rifle was very well cleaned before hand. The problem truly is light strike.

It does seem silly to have to file down a firing pin on a new gun. Bad Savage... bad.

It seems odd, but the truth may be that they aren't being sent for RMA in large enough numbers to warrant a recall, business is a numbers game, probably costs less to RMA a few than to replace bolts on every single serial number...could be that people are sorting it out themselves, or just dealing with it, and I've heard a lot of people don't have the issue at all. Before I bought it, I read a number of good reviews about them, I wouldn't have bought it if I thought it might be a hunk of junk. My Savage Axis runs like any other bolt gun i've ever fired, never a single failure of any kind...accuracy isn't stellar, but it runs. I like Savage, they are affordable, and they work...some people can afford a Mercedes, some people can only afford a used Honda...I don't drive a Mercedes.

Oh and like I said, my son's Rascal runs flawlessly now...here's what it looks like now...picked up an older used bushnell 2.5x (japan made), Rascal scope bases, and cheapo weaver rings...threw the bi-pod from my .308 on it, for effect...he loves it...
