Savage Scout Rifle

How does this get into the Battle Rifle forum?

Jeff Cooper gets the credit for the scout rifle concept, which he envisioned as primarily having a martial purpose, despite its usefulness across a broad spectrum of disciplines; not unlike the Canadian Ranger rifle. The Savage Scout was the first commercial attempt at producing a Scout Rifle, thus its consideration as a battle rifle is not entirely misplaced, whereas the threads concerning the Styer Scout in the Precision Rifle section makes me think some have missed the point.

I thought the Steyr predated the Savage by a few years.

Between the Savage and the Ruger, the Ruger is the better rifle IMHO. I'm not a fan of the Savage bolt, which again in my opinion is more complicated than it needs to be, although the way the bolt handle fastens to the bolt is perhaps the strongest in the industry. However, a short coming of the design is the firing pin passage through a floating bushing, which leaves something to be desired. I dislike Accu-triggers.

I am a fan of the Ruger CRF action, but some of Ruger's stocks have a clubby feel, and changing the stock to a high quality custom stock increases the cost significantly, but it comes down to what the rifle is worth to you. My experience with the Ruger trigger is mostly with the Ruger Alaskan, which I liked, and if the Ruger Scout has the same trigger, it should be fine. Ruger's barrel band front sight is excellent, and the protected ghost ring looks good, although I haven't used one.

These are my off the cuff opinions of rifles I haven't had in my hands, but I am familiar with both breeds.

I loved my ruger scout. The trigger was excellent after a spring swap. The rifle had a good solid heft to it and the sights were awesome but I bought it to have a bush trompin rifle with apperature sights and found it a little "clunky" for my liking. Doesn't carry well in the hand even with my DIY flush mount mag. Very nice rifles just didn't suit MY needs. No savage that's passed through my hands really compares imo.

I like the savage scout 11- accu trigger, aluminum bedded accu stock, cheek riser, picitanny rail, 10 round mag, muzzle break, good iron sights, removable butt pad sections, savage is known for their super accurate barrels, cost is economical compared to the other options, looks cool .

I like the ruger Scout to, but I prefer the savage because of the looks and everything I listed.....not because I got it for less then wholesale at $607 taxes in ;)
