Savage Stevens 200 Review or "The Poor Mans Precision Rifle"

One step closer to a stevens 200 for me. I don't hunt, but at that price and the chance of me doing so one day, it seems worthwhile.

If you seriously want a decent rifle to build upon on at a future date you should consider a Howa S2. Great quality and a factory trigger that blows the "Accutrigger" of any Savage out of the water - let alone the old Savage/Stevens unit.

Wow that little Stevens sure is taking the shooting sports by storm. I'd have to say its been the best kept secret from Savage in a long while. I too am planing a Stevens build and just took possession of a brand new .308. I have a Boyd's prairie hunter on the way as well as a rifle basix trigger, a shooters supply tactical bolt and new Nikon glass on their way. One thing I am going to do is put a barrel on it. One question I was wondering as there are so many barrel manufacturers has anyone had any experience with one or more of the drop in style.

Quick question, I would like to know if the trigger guard on the Stevens 200 is made of plastic?

I always upgraded my trigger guard, but I stopped. The plastic wont freeze my fingers in winter and being that it is only a trigger guard and not a bottom metal it wont do anything to stiffen up the stock so who cares. If it brakes get a new one.

From what I understand this isn't exactly typical stevens 200 accuracy is it? Meaning one should expect these results? Love the cost of the rife though.

It's a crap shoot... Of course you always hear the good results more then the bad...

In factory trim with 55gr bullets my .223 would pattern 4" groups at 100M, add bedding and 69gr-75gr hand loads an she is sub MOA out to 300M

As an out of the box rifle I was not impressed with anything except the price, with a few hours labour and $10/$20 in JB weld I had a great little "sleeper"...

You can do a pretty simple trigger job on the non accutriggers, I changed out the spring and cleaned up the sear connection just today on a savage 11 and it's easily half as heavy, going to do the ol water bottle weight trigger test tomorrow and report back, i'll get you a link to the trigger job site too.
Mine is in .308 and comes with some plastic "iron sites" that still look plenty serviceable. Want to try bedding it with some JB weld too.
