Help! i shot corrosive through my 858 when i was camping and didn't clean it for 2 days, dumb i know, but i've done it through my sks before (non chrome barrel) and it was fine.

the 858's barrel, however, rusted out hard. i cleaned the hell out of it with boiling water, solvent, more water, a bunch of dry patches and some outers gun oil until the patches were totally clean.

it looked fine with except some minor pitting at the corner where the grooves meet the lands. 2 days later i checked it again, the whole inside of the barrel was brown again.

cleaned it again with the same result, but this time sprayed a ton of wd40 through it.

5 days later and it's happened again! it is stored in a gun safe with a new silica gel can, the other guns aren't rusting at all. how do i get this rust under control, oil apparently doesn't do anything for it at this point.

shoot it again, and clean it again with boiling water. see if that works maybe.

Weird. I've unintentionaly left mine for a month with no ill effects. But i don't and never will use water for cleaning.

????

Why???

I only shoot corrosive surplus and always pour a kettle full of hot water down the bore before I clean and have never seen or had any rust in any of my CZ's/CSA's.

I was refering to innercity about never using water, as can be seen in the quote

once rust has set in, there is little one can do about it. Shoot the s**t outta it and clean it right afterwards and see how it looks. No different, your barrel is gonna be garbage then

i haven't tried varsol yet, i imagine that will strip the greyish paint/coating on the outside though. can anyone recommend a rust remover that hopefully won't destroy the finish if i get a bit on the outside?

i don't know how it even could keep rusting like this through all the oil. its in 7.62 so im thinking i may stick a 7mm brass brush on a drill and give it a serious scrubbing after it sits with some CLR for a bit, ill just plug the chamber with a sponge ear plug or something so it doesnt drip into the action

I like the shoot it again idea. Maybe use something non-corrosive this time for good measure. Hopefully that will burn anything remaining out. Then clean again, maybe try leaving the barrel to soak in a rust penetrant? Or scrub the hell out of it with WD. I've saved some pretty rusty pieces this way (not all gun related, but useful nonetheless).

ya ill run a few hundred rounds through it and give a serious cleaning after, i have no idea why its so crappy, like i said my sks has been left uncleaned after hundreds of rounds for days and its ok, not particularly humid here

Ive had this happen. Clean the copper out of it. Fouling builds up in layers, there is corrosive powder fouling under a layer or 2 of copper in the bore. Have a look at the rifling from the muzzle with a flashlight. You will see at the least copper streaks in the grooves and possibly built up on the lands. Clean it out and re-oil and your problem is solved. Believe me, I thought Id be cunning and just clean the powder fouling, leaving the copper. It rusted through a very heavy coat of Ballistol. Ballistol!. If you want an easy time cleaning that little smoke wagon, switch to wipe-out. Run a patch of wipeout accelerator then fill the bore, walk away. It has great corrosion inhibitors and cleans all the copper out. Even filthy Czech surplus becomes effortless. I just let it soak overnight and patch out the mess the next day. You dont even need boiling water or oil afterwards as it prevents corrosion.

Im am not an SKS guy by anymeans but arent their bores chrome lined???

I know the non restricted 858's arent which means cleaning should be done within a few hours

hmm, good point supernova, never thought of that. i'll give that a go. thanks for the input all, there may be hope yet. otherwise i'll be updating the post to "who can replace my barrel" haha

bfiles, many are, some aren't. Mine is a russian with no chrome

I use Hoppes. It's made for corrosive ammo (read the box). The manual that comes with these rifles states WD-40. So in my opinion i don't use water in them.

Hoppes on a .30 cal mop, then 2 patches. Repeat until the patches are clean. I had a Norinco .22 that was rusted from new. I cleaned it for almost 3 hours before the patches came out clean.

I have found that WeaponShield is the best protectant after cleaning. It starts out thick, then spreads thin and really sticks.

After corrosive, I flush out the bore with hot water, use bore cleaner, then light oil. Good as new. The trick is to clean it right away. If you can't clean right away (camping), use non-corrosive ammo as it will save you the headaches. the Norinco non-corrosive is quite reasonable.

I live in nova scotia which is humid to say the least. I shot a bunch of corrosive thru my Sks and left it for 3 hours max and I could see corrosion starting in the gas system. Like bfiles said I dose it good with boiling water run brush thru dose again let dry only takes a minute then clean normally and I've had no problems at all. Just so humid here you can't wait. Or just keep a steady stream of rounds going thru her. :)

Sorry but replacing a barrel on a CZ isnt very standard, quite difficult actually. Best bet if you cant get the barrel to a state where you like it is sell it as a parts gun and buy yourself another
