SBR Magpul Backpacker 10/22 thread, here is my build please share your SBR Backpacker

Here's some more pictures for the thread, The bugbuster compact adustable objective scope is a pretty handy size for a takedown .22lr and very well made for the price.

My set up. I've polished up the inside of the receiver, bolt, guide rod and trigger components. Made and installed a bolt buffer and did the auto bolt drop mod. 100 rounds on board. Not seen in the pictures are a Swiss Army knife and two allen keys stored in the pistol grip and a small aaa Olight flashlight that resides in the velcro under the cheek rest. The little black capsule under the butt pad contains a small fishing kit.

I know, not a SBR but it dreams of one day being one.

The backpacker stock is such a huge upgrade for the takedown, very well designed.
Nice set up Tinner4, I like the look of your 16 inch barrel, pretty close to the sweet spot for a .22lr as far as vellocity gain.

In BC our silly hunting laws don't appreciate barrels under 12.5 inches or so and they consider them to be pistol barrels and thus prohibited from hunting use.

Thanks, it has been fun building up and modifying the kit to fit in there. I was thinking about starting a thread about what others have added to their Magpul backpacker stocks for survival. I got the idea from a couple of youtube vids I saw. Still would like to find some more space in there for some water purification tablets and a few painkillers, anti-histamines and diarhea meds. I have also kitted out the bag with a few items but it is far from finished. Which reminds me I need to pick up a couple of paintball pods for the two smaller pouches.

As soon as I saw the Backpacker I knew I had to have one. It has definately exceeded my expectations and stirred my imagination. If you have a takedown 10/22 this would be the stock I would recommend.

I was wondering how the 'trapper' JW-15 and Stevens 300/305 arrived at the 13" barrel lengths.

Hard to say if it was an influence but it works well for folks in B.C.
In reality there are not that many people hunting with such short barrels anyways but I wouldn't be surprised of some are and have not carefully read the regulations.

Well...now I know why Dlask sells barrels at 12.5". As for their 8" barrels, I would assume its intended for the entire rifle to comply with the 26" overall length.

I got a Takedown + Backpacker too. I actually purchased the rifle because of the stock. The cool factor is just too insane.

For anyone considering a Vortex Crossfire red dot or Venom reflex here are a few pictures.

You can see the height difference here.

If you look closely here you can see the different view through the two dots.

Overall I feel the Venom is the better optic on the backpacker. The larger field of view plus lower optic height seem right at home on this rifle.

I plan to test the return to zero mount on the Venom once I can get some shooting in.

The Venom also keeps with the whole “compact” style of the rig. I unfortunately need etched as red dots “burst” for me, probably go with a Vortex Spitfire or a Primary Arms etched/prism style.

Agreed, I have astigmatism and often red dots look like starbursts to me. These both have a burst like appearance for me inside the house but outside are perfectly round dots.

I'm going to try to get my glasses prescription changed in an effort to address the dot blur/bursts.

Like you I'm considering etched options as well...

Here are a few of the 10/22 Platform SBR's I built... but as I said earlier, no one of these are "lightweights."

New rear sight arrived today.

Railed rear sight weighs 2.6oz and the short non railed rear sight weighs 1.25oz.

Added two QD sling mounts and I'm trying out the Ferro Concepts Slingster. So far I like the sling, I may try to find a rotation limited front QD socket though as the swing can spin and twist without the rotation restricted front sling point.

OP, this is truly amazing. looks fantastic. i had this idea in my head for a while. Already got a 1022 TD, tac hammer 9", and backpacker stock. all black just like yours. I tried to find some pics of this exact combo as i was getting the parts together, but couldnt find anything until today. Thanks for this thread.
BTW wasnt it 28" to be classified NR.. ?? i was trying to figure out how to space that buttpad to make it 28, it would be great if its all good as is.

I've been messing around with the backpacker in SBR form for a while now...heres my mods from this past winter. I took a different approach with my sighting system with the Williams Ace in the hole but have since removed them as after extensive testing with about 5 different TD's has proven that a receiver mounted sight of any kind will not return to zero after re-assembly.
I have since sold the AdTac 9" barrel and replaced it with a 12" Whistlepig I had imported and a Holosun dot on the magpul mount as shown in the bottom pic. Rock solid and returns to absolute zero everytime the rifle is taken-down and re-assembled so this is where it will stay for awhile.
BTW nice build G. Mitchell!

Thank you for the compliment. To be NR it must be over 660mm which is basically 26". My build is just over 26.5".
