SBR Magpul Backpacker 10/22 thread, here is my build please share your SBR Backpacker

I've been messing around with the backpacker in SBR form for a while now...heres my mods from this past winter. I took a different approach with my sighting system with the Williams Ace in the hole but have since removed them as after extensive testing with about 5 different TD's has proven that a receiver mounted sight of any kind will not return to zero after re-assembly.
I have since sold the AdTac 9" barrel and replaced it with a 12" Whistlepig I had imported and a Holosun dot on the magpul mount as shown in the bottom pic. Rock solid and returns to absolute zero everytime the rifle is taken-down and re-assembled so this is where it will stay for awhile.
BTW nice build G.Mitchell!

Thank you, your setups look very nice as well.

What level of accuracy or lack thereof were you getting from your testing with iron sights on the receiver and barrel? I am content with some shifting of my POA to POI as the iron sights would only be a backup and I'm only looking for minute of squirrel/grouse/rabbit/etc accuracy for the iron sights.

Where did you get the 12” whistlepig imported thru? I’ve been trying everywhere to find one!

Great set up man, and thanks again for the TD. Hope to receive it soon.

Do you guys have any pictures of the short Tac hammer barrel WITH the rail, all assembled on the gun, preferably in both configurations, normal and forward facing rail. It would help me to decide what optic to go with..
Also, why some of you don't use the Tac hammer brake? And is the removal and reinstall of factory TH rail an easy process, or those screws are easy to strip?

Louis, the proprietor of WhistlePig barrels is very interested in reaching out to the canadian market but has had some difficulty in finding a solid dealer/importer to meet his needs. If you call him he will work with you and fill out the required paperwork sent by your importer of choice...he really is a great guy.
I've brought in three barrels from him now using Prophet Rivers 50$ importing service and it was super easy from start to finish. The Whistlepig Acculite barrels are some of the finest I've used and they will hold their own accuracy wise out to 100yds against KIDD, Volquartsen, Dlask etc.

In the spirit of the SBR thread heres a 3.6lb 10/22 with a 10" WhistlePig barrel.

I never used the rail on the Tac-Hammer barrel as it interfered with my KIDD charging handle during take-down or re-assembly and it sat way to high for my taste.
I briefly thought of reversing it to run a forward mounted red dot but, again, the mount was way too high for me and the magpul did the job beautifully at half the height, barely any weight and you still have the ability to see irons if need be.
No worries at all regarding the stripping of screws as they are tapped into the steel portion of the barrel not the soft alloy.

As for the brake, the barrel is way to short to run a ported brake...it's just really too loud for me and the kids. I prefer to run a blow-forward type compensator like the Dlask as it still helps with muzzle rise and slightly helps the noise issues associated with a 9-12" barrel. You can see a picture of the Dlask linear compensator installed on the Tac-Hammer barrel in the bottom pic.

These are just my own personal observations and opinions, I will say that the 9" Tac-Hammer was a wonderful shooting barrel and would eat most any bulk ammo without a hiccup. The only reason it went down the road and was replaced by the 12" Whistlepig was due to the BC hunting regs.

Whistle pig barrels can be bought from a non site sponsored importer... They reached out to Whistle Pig when I was looking for 10" barrels for a non takedown build I was considering.

And did you end up receiving the product? If the outfit you're referring to starts with the letter A and ends with the letter C I can assure you it is cheaper and more reliable to deal with Louis himself with Prophet River as your third-party importer.

That is the one... I've dealt with them twice without issue, I've heard rumblings about them but so far I've been pleased.

That Whistle Pig 12" looks pretty nice..... if anyone is considering an import send me a PM and maybe we can dilute the import costs a bit.... :)

Very informative post, thanks. I guess I'll start with TH rail and a stock handle, and then go from there.
I also noticed that my TH barrel has very light rifling, almost no depth to it, is that normal for 22, or did I get a lemon :) ?

I've always like your SBR builds, thanks for sharing.

Most of the builds were for my kids, but I am feeling the urge to do a ultralight SBR for our Northern hunts... at the moment, I am using .20 cal Sheridan air pistols... the fact that I have a Buck Mark Sporter is holding me back, particularly because this one is extremely accurate with CCI SV's.

Ok, mine is ready too. Will try it out this way, if it will not surprise me with good accuracy, I might go with scout mount and a red dot instead.
I do hate how the scope sticks out when folded.. so time will tell.

Looks nice Dimitri, not much shorter when broken down and locked together in that configuration but if it proves worthy of the scope you could just pack the 2 halves separately in a custom case.

I can get a picture up when it's complete, but I'm following your lead.

I picked up the 9" TacHammer and a backpacker stock for my TD. Swapped in my VQ triggerpack from a previous build and have ordered the Spud sights and a VQ bolt from Sylvestre.

I think I'll dump the TacHammer rail and put a Magpul rail on it like yours, as my Aimpoint sits a little high right now. When I get the irons on it and teh bolt swapped in I'll take some pictures. Now to sell my older cannibalized 10/22. ;)

Sounds like you're well on the way to an awesome build. :)

Yeah the Vortex Crossfire sat too high for me, the Venom is a much better fit.

Looking forward to seeing your build.
