Specifically, what are the 2 different platforms I keep hearing about?

I'm looking at getting a semi .308 in an AR type platform that can be just as versatile with aftermarket parts and accessories as our ARs are. DI or piston doesn't matter, neither does NR status (or else I'd be looking at the Alberta Tactical offering). I've handled the M&P10 and liked it, but was turned off by the proprietary items on it. I liked the Sig but was unsure about what "mags" it takes (I was told this was important to know).

So which brands would be good to go with on a long term basis (I won't be selling it) and offer the most versatility aftermarket and parts wise? Or should I just look at building one?

I have a Gen 1 DPMS LR-308...it's a pretty solid rifle and there are lots of parts and accessories available for the DPMS platform. The AR-10 is also reputedly a solid rifle...lots of stuff available for that as well. Those are the two main platforms [AFAIK...I'm just a dabbler]. I think you have to work backward on your question...figure out what you want your .308 AR to do, and how it should look, and then figure out which platform does it best. IMO you can't really go wrong with DPMS but you know what you need/want better than I do.

Check out the 308AR forum... http://forum.308ar.com/ . The people on there are serious aficionados, and there is probably nothing you want to know that hasn't been discussed there, at length.

And yeah, if I wanted to spend the money, I'd get a Gen2 DPMS rifle too....

DPMS is 6061 aluminum and Armalite is 7075

I think the new DPMS G2 is 7075.

OP, the term AR10 is an Armalite trademark, and refers to their rifles. Of those, there are the original AR-10's (which are extremely rare), then the AR-10B (take modified M14 mags), and the newer AR-10A's (take PMags).

Otherwise, there is the DPMS LR-308's, their new G2, which are not compatible with each other.
Then there's the LMT MWS, which is actually compatible (upper and lower that is) with the KAC SR-25's.

Of the piston 308 ARs, there's the PWS MK2 series, Sig 716, Ruger SR762. These are all proprietary as far as uppers go. Not sure about the lowers.

Some newer offerings include the Bushmaster XM10, Aero Precision M5E1, Palmetto State (forget the model number) and Rainier Arms RA-308.

I have probably missed some, but it's hard to keep up with all the offerings.

I have the Wyndham SRC308. Like most of the others it accepts a few std parts, but most is proprietary. I find it's a good gun, no issues and not half bad accuracy wise with a good hand load.

It depends on a couple of things:
1) your budget - like AR-15s they go from $ to $$$$$
2) what you mean by adding aftermarket parts - you talking a stock and scope or you talking everything from BCG, small parts, trigger, etc?

I almost bought one of the Dpms .308 ar style that IRG had on sale earlier this year, now regretting not they were between $699-$750. USD. I believe, hoping they will come up with more!

Lots of good info for me to sift through.

Hand guards, charging handles, BCG, stocks, grips, rails, etc.....

My budget was up to $3k.

Is building one as painless (for sourcing parts) as building an AR-15 is?

Building a .308 pattern is a pain in the ass to get the comments you want in Canada. You have Armalite pattern, and DPMS pattern, and everything in between. There is no standard pattern large frame AR's unlike the AR-15 pattern. Lots of guys do it, I've done it, but it can take quite awhile to source your equipment and make it all work together.

AR-10's are very proprietary not like the AR-15.

If the mh didn't have that small problem with p-mags, I'd own one and recommend it.

Get a gen2. Its gonna get popular. Ar15 handguards....ar15 weight.
Yes. There isnt a lot of support out there yet. But it will eventually.

I keep telling every cgner that comes on and ask about building one. Dont....just buy a complete rifle. Im at 2900$ and the rifle is not even complete yet.

i have an AR10 from aramalite. one of the earlier ones that take modified M14 mags. new AR10's use Pmags like the DPMS versions do. i also have a G2 DPMS. that being said, get a G2 DPMS. DPMS to me is a dirty word, but the rifle is more Remington anyways.

the G1 DPMS rifle patterns guns have lots of aftermarket support, but there are 3 different rail heights to ad in confusion if you want rails. the Armalite rifles have support but not as much.

the G2 DPMS are the newest guns, can use any rails that fit a factory Ar15 barrel nut. MI also makes G2 specific rails.

most other AR15 parts usually fit, except for mag release, bolt catch, bolt parts.

To throw in even more confusion, the new Armalite AR-10a uppers can't be used on their older lowers, due to the magwell rearrangement. That's just in the last 2 years.

had a sig 716, some things that pissed me off was super short foreend, inability to use a raptor charging handle..... other then that it was "ok"..... sold it because the raptor chargng handle was a make it or break it thing for me, call me a wuss but those 308 have a lot of spring in them and using a stock a2 style charging handle sucks....

upgraded to this sr-25acc, installed a raptor charging handle and a magpul miad grip and i am good to go..... well worth spending a little extra considering all the high end premium parts that come with it, buy once.... cry once.

Even bolts can be different. Krieger will not chamber a 308 ar barrel unless you supply them with a bolt. Apparently there is a few thousandths difference between the various makers which can affect headspace

Well, I thought irunguns would be on here by now offering us Canadians another super deal on the Dpms, but so far, nothing but crickets ! ;) wishful thinking on my part!

Been researching this topic for quite awhile now and hands down I say DMPS G2 (Recon for me) unless you want to get into the KAC price range.

So far from what I've gathered the DPMS G2 needs and adjustable gas block (several claims it's over gassed a bit) and the Midwest Industries hand guard is highly recommended (think the reasoning was lower weight, lower profile... fits over an adjustable gas block ?.... can't remember the details on that)

The G2 certainly is the start of something new and great in the "Ar 10" world. I'd recommend researching their design and compare it to others to see why several are suggesting it. ......Just know that right after I purchase a G2 they will come out with an even better G3.... just my kinda luck !
