School me on NR .308 Stag 10 / Matrix / BCL / Troy etc. builds

Have I read correctly that the Stag 10 receiver is of higher quality than the others? I think I read that it is forged and not milled. I’m not sure what the difference would mean. I’ve also read that most are 7071 aluminum although the Sterling seems to be 6061. Am I mistaken?

If I’m not mistaken all were 6061 aluminum since it was cheaper and the stag was the only one in 7075 aluminum since they always did em in 7075 upside to the bcl is its more ambi friendly out of the box compared to the stag no idea about the sterling didn’t own one.

Stag is a better, older ans larger manufacturer.
Stag develloped their own design for the american market and released it when they felt it desserved their name and lifetime warranty. They launched it to perform against the best AR10 brands.

BCL (formerly NEA) develloped their design for the canadian market. They launched it as an alternative in the then limited non-restricted market. They modified it a few times since initial launch.
Most others bought some version of the BCL design.

I don't want to bash anyone but you can't become Stag arms overnight.
We're lucky all these brands are working hard for our small market, including some Canadian companies.

Both 6061 and 7075 have a high strength to weight ratio just 7075 is higher than 6061 as it contains more Zinc. 6061 is still pretty strong it’s just easier to work with for machining and welding which is why a lot of boats are made with 6061 and why the Sterling machining quality is so nicely done. I understand people most of the time will want what is better. Just keep in mind lots of AR rifles are made from 6061 with out a peep of problems.

Add an ambi safety selector...Geissele or Raidan charging handle and a Norgon (or similar) ambi magazine release and you have an ambi gun with very nice, high end parts!!!

Decision made. I’ve followed the most constant stream of advice I’ve seen in this and other threads: I’ve ordered a Stag 10.

I wish I could have gotten the “bones” version Arms East use to sell but oh well.

I’ll be using it for hunting and plinking. I don’t think I’ll need any BUIS and I plan on mounting a Bushnell 1-8 SMRS. I’m not convinced I’ll like the hand guard. I’ve always liked the tube style ones. Any idea what my options are? The rest of the rifle will have good old Magpul.

I’d like to build an NR .308 but the options have greatly increased recently. Can anyone here point me to some reference material or explain what is compatible with what?

I doubt I’ll be going crazy with Gucci parts or try to make the lightest rifle possible. I just want something accurate, reliable, 8-9lbs, in .308 with an 18.6” barrel, and an anodized finish.

Should I build or just buy a rifle?

If I build, I’m not sure where to start and what choices will restrict options such as hand guards.

Just buy a complete rifle.

If anything doesn't work you have no headaches.

Can’t go wrong with a Stag. This one built from a receiver set with a stag rail which was changed to an MI.

UPDATE - A Stag 10 LEV2 arrived at my door yesterday. I’ve got to say that I’m quite impressed with it so far. Very very nice feel to it. Fit and finish is 10/10, everything feels very solid, the trigger is surprisingly good and it actually feels fairly light. No regrets so far!

I have no spare BUIS at the moment so put on a Bushnell SMRS in an ADM. The rifle doesn’t feel so light anymore but I’m hoping it will allow me to plink from 0-600m. Can’t wait to get to the range.

So small odds and ends that’ll I’ll need to dress up the rifle:

Some MLOK sections
BUIS
A muzzle brake
Some XCR mags

Why so little discussion on the Troy 102? Was it a bust? I have one with about 500 rounds through it and no issues. Granted, I've never shot a Stag or BCL, but I find it odd that there was such anticipation and then nothing...

^ Most likely because people that wanted a .308 AR style rifle already picked up a Stag, or BCL or two of them and didn't see the need to grab a Troy102 also. They were out both out for sale at least one full year before the Troy, BCL maybe 2 years prior.

I had considered one but some of the most recent posts cast some doubt on their availability and customer support. Stag has a good track record for both. As well, if I was going with the 102 design I would want the most recent version with the bells and whistles and value the MK7 brings.

It wasn't a bust

They flew off the shelves when they went on sale for $1300. There are more options now as well --
