School me on Remington 700 Tactical, Police, etc...

I've heard a lot about bedding and replacing triggers? I'm a rifle newbie.... What do I need to do for aftermarket parts?

honestly, what the hell should I buy for my first good rifle!?

Well that's easy, Remington 700 S.P.S. Varmint in .308 Winchester, they are a great value $40 rebate on right now and they are only $549 before that! 26" barrel, bi-pod/swivel sling mounts. The stock leaves a little to be desired (future upgrade item), but after zeroing mine in at the range, I was pleasantly surprised (to be honest I almost pissed my pants) to find the groups WELL under an inch @ 100 yards. I won't post what they were exactly as that causes a controversy every time I do, But It was most impressive. BTW mine is left handed.

They may be a bit heavy and cumbersome for you in the bush, but on a bench or a bi-pod.... it was a poor boys dream come true.

Where can you get this for $549? And does Rem rebate you the $40?

I bought mine at Cabela's (S.I.R.) in Winnipeg, mine is left handed, so it was $599 and Remington will rebate me the $40 making it $559

The right handed models... for everyone else (LOL) is $50 cheaper at $569. which will be $529 after rebate. They should have them right handers in stock, although I got the last lefty they will see for a while.

**update** I just checked the web site and they are not on there, and the price is $569 in the catalog not $549 as I previously stated ( I thought the right hander was $50 cheaper, I guess it was only $30 difference)

Anyways, you would have to call to see if they have them. The catalog number is 427559

other cals available are .204,.223, 22-250, .243

so flutes are a bad thing?

Yup, They cause cancer and make you want to kill baby seals. Ask anybody.:D

No, there's nothing wrong with flutes. There is a school of thought that fluting weakens the barrel, and theoretically this is possible, but in reality, fluting is simply a way to have a certain diameter of barrel with slightly less weight and slightly (and I do mean slightly) more surface area for cooling. Plus it looks cool, which is the predominant reason for people choosing it, I believe. 700s are all basically the same rifle (slight receiver dimensional differences between pre 74 and post 74 years, I'm told, haven't got around to miking a few yet to check). The primary differences will be barrel (style, dimensions, twist, rifling), stocks (wood, synthetic, varmint, sporter) and finish (polished blue, stainless steel, matte blue, a sort of parkerising). Certain models coming out of the custom shop are better finished and, presumably, assembled. I have quite a few in various calibers and models, they are indeed a "good rifle". - dan

Good analogy on the fluted barrel Dan.

I also think in my experience it doesn't affect group size either way. It's more of a personal preference. Personally I like a heavy barrel with no fluting.

I had a Rem 700 police in 223 26" barrel and it shot very good 1/4" at 100 and just over the inch at 300.
I really didnt like the pistol grip on stock quite large and was not comfortable for me.
I bought this spring a Rem 700 XCR with a stainless barrel a little lighter than the Police model 26" it has TriNyte finnish very very nice bolt works like it was in butter. Has a very nice Bell & Carlson stock Green this gun shoots as better than the police only because I did a lot load development, this .223 works well at 1000y with 75gr Berger VLD bullets, if I catch the wind okay or better still no wind it will shoot under the inch at 300y. i would suggest you buy the 26" barrel the 20 may not make it to 1000y youm need to keep velocities up and that extra 6" really helps

Where did you get it and how much? Gogeous rifle and I would love to have a new one myself.

Is this top one a good buy? I've never heard of Falcon Menace scopes before...

I will let you know tomorrow or Friday, ordered on in .223 and waiting for the postie to deliver it. Not sure if it is the best deal out there currently but definately good.

There are a number of reviews on the Falcon scopes, seems to me to be a very good scope for the money. Sure there are better optics out there but you are going to pay more for them.

snipercentral had some pretty good things to say about the varmint and tactical. Except for the cheap stocks, but you can always upgrade anyway :)

Jim asked simple question "what are the main differences between all of Remington's tactical style rifles?". Why anybody can answer this without going to politics? Does anyone has enough knowledge to write this?

Read post #42 on the previous page.

well yeah man, I mean, if we don't vote for this one douche then some other douche will get in beating 2 other douches... then we're screwed and all of our guns will melt making long range shooting really hard.
