School me on SKS’s

Hmmm. Well they claim Red Box made after 2019 is non corrosive . But that’s
THEY and who knows who THEY are

On another note I don’t really know much about reloading but I take it you can’t reload steel ammo ?
They theoretically can be reloaded and I saw videos on youtube people reloading Barnaul steel cases. But they are berdan primed, so you need to have a lot of those to even start thinking about it. So, if you want to reload 7.62x39, get brass case MFS ammo. It's probably the cheapest brass cased option and it has good reloadable brass.

Some people tend to go a bit crazy when shooting a SKS and will blast through hundreds of rounds in an afternoon….. more reason to “stack it deep”. Personally for me when I was shooting them I felt like I needed to keep at least a few thousand rounds in my inventory at all times. Thankfully a crate of surplus ammo was less than $200.

What ammunition do you fellas use mostly . Steel or Brass cased ?
Thank You

Steel. Brass in a rifle that is going to kick it into next week, beat up the cases and not be any more accurate anyway is a waste. To me at least. Literally no benefit. Oddly enough mine shoots PPU brass case hunting ammo way worse than Chinese surplus lol

Being a lazy git tho, I do like some Norinco red box non corrosive.

The guys saying soon these prices will be a distant memory are right.

The only reason I have an SKS is because when society comes apart at the seams, there will be LOADS of 762x39 ammo lying around. Well maybe not lying around but certainly available. The SKS is rugged and reliable, if not accurate. At least it will pretty much always go BANG when you need it to. I'd consider it the last ditch of last ditches sort of a rifle.

Mine is the opposite. It shoots the super cheap soft point ammo better than just about anything.

Accuracy wise, Barnaul is the best. Unfortunately they are banned now for import since they are a Russian brand. I was looking for over one year until I found a bunch which were reasonable priced. Ruag is brass cased and nothing special, unless you reload. Make sure you have a spotter or a large area where you can easily find the casings since they fly out like a Mini 14 spews them out.

Norinco red box are 100 % non corrosive. This has been discussed many times and no need to bash people with comments like "who is THEY?". They are steel cased and fairly okay. The currently offered Chinese surplus corrosive is more accurate than most and still cheap. When talking about corrosive, keep in mind that it is the primer which is corrosive. Takes no more than 10/15 minutes to clean.

My comment about THEY was not meant as a bash no offence intended

Could a shooter have some sort of catch net to capture wayward spent casings ?

Scianna and others any other recommendations concerning brass cased ammunition that is reasonably priced ?
What anbout MFS anmmunition ?
Any sales I should take advantage of ?
I don’t reload yet maybe in a year or so
Thank You

Hi L - The best thing is what we use at my range - Princess has magnetic floor sweepers - there are some on Clearance ca $17 if you live near a store. Otherwise there is one for $29.99 - https://www.princessauto.com/en/17-in-magnetic-floor-sweeper/product/PA0009428814
It's very convenient if picking up 100+ cases. BTW - my FT only tosses them about 10 feet, but zero to 45-deg right. TWO things you can do to reduce the throw if yours goes flying - 1) easy fix - drill some additional holes in the gas tube to reduce throw - only do a couple of 1/8" holes about 1" from the gas-port end. If this is not enough, drill a couple more, but Don't go nutz, you can't put it back. 2) - more work - 'square' the rear of the ejection port to direct the cases back towards a 3-o'clock direction. Lots of work with a dremel, but if you have an angle grinder and a 'fine touch' it's easier.
PS - Here's a 'zeroing Target' also.

Thank You Buck !
Is that an actual target available for purchase ?

I got that target years ago, likely off sksboards .com. Just print your own . . . I found some 'card stock' at Staples for ca $18 / 250 sheets = 65# white ; You get 'cleaner holes' with the heavier paper, especially helpful for 22lr accuracy checks where one wants to have distinct edges to the punctures. I haven't bought any targets for about 6-7 years, but when I see something 'new' I print 5-10 . . . now got too many.

^ ^ They do fine for the Chinese Empties 😁
L - As for the sights, I just painted them White. Then on the Rear, I added some yellow Hi-lite. Now at 75 I need 'Glowing Targets, too.
