School me on SKS’s

Buck the target that you posted previously what are the dimensions ?
As someone that has not really used open sights as my hunting rifles are scoped
am I going to see the point of aim at 25 m ?

I have mentioned this on this site and others that not having a mentor that was into firearms and hunting was and is a disadvantage . No pity party just saying !
 
Hi L - - The target is just 8.5 x 11 - on copy paper or card stock if you have some available. For Iron sights you just get the top of the front sight pin to be level with the 'flat' of the rear sight and centred in the 'gap'. Then place (visually) the top of the pin at the center of the target and have a firm rest like a sand bag. ( Some people prefer using a '6-o'clock Hold' on the target so None of the bullseye is obscured while aiming. . . Up to you how you go ) Hold the forearm firmly since there will be a bit of recoil due to the moderate power of the round Plus the recoil of the Semi action. The rear ramp should be at 100 - the 'second step' from the 'back - lowest' position. The Front pin may need adjusting, using the Tool you have ordered (I believe). There are vids showing how to do all of this as well . . . YT is your friend.
When you try to shoot at 100 yds with the irons, you will want a 'single Bullseye' of contrasting black and white rings - filling the page so ca 8" diameter. This will give you a defined Point of Aim since 8" at 100 yards is a sorta small thing - esp when you (and I ) are used to using scopes.

Attached are a few target options I like for iron sights. The vintage milsurp target is a bit small for my eyes at 100yds these days, but the others work well. They print on 8.5x11 paper. I like to use a lollipop hold at 6 o'clock to get the best precision out of my crappy eyes combined with the iron sights.

I’m finding out that SKS fellas are a great bunch !
 
If any of you fellas care to make recommendations on any accessories that I may want to pick up for the SKS I would appreciate it .

I’m thinking this would include spare parts
Upgrade parts
I might want to get an new Chinese original sling
I think I’m good with stripper clips

I see a few stripper clip accessories that make loading the shells into the clips or loading the shells from the clips into the rifle advertised . Any of those worthwhile having ?
I think True North sells some gadgets

I have never felt that loading stripper clips was difficult or even that time consuming and loading the SKS from a stripper clip is also quite easy, so never even considered looking for such aids. I just used my SKS's the way they were designed back in the Motherland. The only thing that I felt was of assistance when shooting the SKS was a sling. Hopefully the one you have ordered comes with a sling, try it first before buying another one. I did have one with a bent firing pin. That was a bit scary, as no matter how well I cleaned the firing pin and firing pin channel, I could never get the pin to float freely in the channel. I polished the pin too. I only noticed it when it attempted to roll of my work bench.... It did not roll, LOL. I just found another bolt assembly and used it. It was cheaper and easier to get the whole bolt at the time. Of the ones that I have shot, most were more accurate when the bayonet was extended. Reading your posts makes me wish I hadn't sold all of mine.

Cariboo . I have to tell you I’m like a young child waiting to see what’s under the tree as the rifle should be here today .
I’m not sure if there is a sling with it or not . If not I was thinking going original Chinese one as it’s the French Tickler late 70’s model

Never too late to buy another SKS Cariboo !
 
IMO I don't see a need for any 'spare parts' or 'accessories'. I don't believe my FT came with a sling, but I just use the carrying strap from an old Laptop case (Sally Ann vintage $5). mI would suggest some Boretech C4 to expedite removing carbon from ammo - really helps cleaning the gas tube and Piston as they get carbon 'cooked on'. The pipe cleaners I suggested before will help cleaning the FP-channel and the gas port into the barrel. And loading 5-rounds into clips can be time consuming if you're doing 20 clips - if only 5-10 fiddling with a loader might not be time-effective?
As for the age, the 'First TWO digits' of the SN 'plus 56' indicates the year mfg, so unless the vendor already told you the SN, who knows.

Thanks Buck . No I don’t know the serial number just that it was mentioned late 70’s
Hopefully it will be and all else as advertised .
Going to order those pipe cleaners for sure .
 
Okay I’m not seeing any Triangle on the rifle and no Chinese characters . How do I determine production date ,something about adding 1956 to the serial number

There is a faint triangle that I just found on the stock it has a 4 in it .
The numbers on the buttstock , the top of metal above the charging handle , the trigger guard , and on the other side of the receiver all match

I’m a bit lost ,need help
I need your guys expertise
The rifle looks like it just came from the factory
