School me on SKS magazine options

Only aftermarket sks chassis I would go with, nowadays I would just get type 81. Pictures off the internet.

What is that stock?
I got the adapter already.

i do agree the SKS was never intended to have a detachable mag but if you havta have one then you really have two options, go cheap with duckbill mag (polymer) or go expensive with chinese factory SKS-D which prices seems to keep going higher and higher. once you get the detachable mag out of your system then sell it, at worst you'll break even.

all in between, you will end up losing money and disappointed.

Bahahahahahahahhahahahhaha

Oh...wait... you are serious?

$750 American. And you have to import it yourself or use an importer. My $800 was obviously way too low.

I like the Archangel stock for the price $220 CAD. I had the fab defense stock which many like but in real life I didn't like it that much.

They upgraded the ATI folder and it is kind of okay at $150 but the Canadian market is swamped with them, so I have no temptation whatsoever to get one.

I'm running the hical AR-mag adapter with a whole bunch of XCR mags in my SKS. I also 3D printed extensions for the XCR mags so that they fit my plate carrier mag pouches the same way that regular 5.56/.223 mags would. I lucked out with buying an SKS on EE that already had the adapter installed and the bolt carrier machined to allow mag insertion on a closed bolt.

An additional perk of the hical AR-mag adapter is that you can still remove it easily because it locks in the same way that the duckbill magazines do - so you can simply press the SKS mag release with your thumb, remove the adapter, and insert a duckbill mag.

Excuse the rear sight rail, was going that route until I finally mounted my molot, I dont seem to have issues with all 8 of my mags. I think it comes down too fitting them correctly. The other thing I noticed was the rivet was causing my mag spring to bind, so I had them sent to a gunsmith to have them repaired with a more suitable length, still maintaining the 5round limit.

Thanks everyone. I went and bought one with a Hical adapter too, so will compare it with the original model and see which one I like better.

I kinda dig the tickler look, breaks it up a little!! Lol the upper guard for this chassis is absolute garbage... so why really bother.

ah okay. I would give it a good dip with one can of black. Should be thick enough to just peel it off again.

Just a suggestion, hehe.

I have a tapco and left the '51 Tula wood handguard. I was asked the same thing - to which I replied " I like to get a little wood now and then." I have the tapco guard (in a box with the bayo) but left the wood to this day and I never painted it black.

Hi everyone,

Maybe I'm unCanadian. I don't like the Leafs. I don't drink Tim Horton's coffee. And I never had any interest in owning a $150 (back in the day), sixty-year-old communist-era relic from the back room of Canadian Tire. Until recently.

After owning literally hundreds of firearms in my life, I have finally bought a SKS to give it a try.

The whole 5-round internal mag and stripper clips thing is not going to work for me though. So what are my options for alternatives?

I was looking for a reasonably priced D model to take advantage of AK mags, but I picked up a Russian standard model instead. The price was right.

So from what I can tell, the most common option is to use the duck bill mags. Other than looking absolutely ridonkulous, they don't fit in standard mag pouches. But I understand you can get an adapter that plugs the hole and allows you to cut the duck bill off. That doesn't really interest me though as I would rather not buy a bunch of proprietary mags that only fit one gun, when I've got lots of other different mags already.
Am I missing any other options out there? What do you all use? Any thoughts on the magwell adapters? Any other "mandatory" mods you would recommend? Firing pin/springs/mag release/etc?

I know I'm late to the party here, but these things just never interested me before. But if the Liberals ban every semi-auto they possibly can, because of the popularity of this one, particularly among certain demographics the Liberals try to keep happy, I figure it should be closer to the bottom of their priority list.

But that's using logic, and we all know that the Liberals even want to ban gun-shaped sticks. Especially if they're black.

But not black shoe polish, Justin needs that to play dress up.

Anyway, please let me know your recommendations.

Thanks for looking!

First, congratulations on getting an SKS. I too, balked for many years in getting one, and highly regret blowing off my buddy in 2012 who told me about some wicked deals on some pristine non-refurb all matching Russian ones, telling him the sale price of $150 or $175 or whatever it was, was $125 more than I was willing to pay for a "piece of junk". My ignorance truly showed, and it is funny how sometimes dumb decisions come back to haunt me...I ended up buying my first SKS a few years back at significantly more than that 2012 price, and have since owned 7 of them, most of which are collector's grades. I just love the history of the firearm and at the same time am captivated by how something this old can still work flawlessly.

Secondly and what caught my eye in your post originally is about being "UnCanadian" in hating the Leafs and not drinking Tim Horton's. I must be epitome of an anti-Canadian then, because I absolutely detest the Leafs and think Tim Horton's coffee is grossly overrated. To me it tastes like boiled water with a brown crayon dipped in it. The McDonald's coffee is much better (I drink all my coffee black, to relish the natural flavour), but I am sure many with disagree with me.

Now, as for the SKS. Yes, I find the stripper clips and the pinned to 5 round built-in mag annoying at first, BUT over time have come to appreciate the design for what it is. I bought an SKS off a buddy earlier this year that was butchered with an ATI Strikeforce stock and a detachable mag...only reason I bought it was because he had the original furniture (and it turned out to be an all original more rear Izhevsk, not Tula!). I put the furniture back after trying it once with the chunky mag and the price was more than right. It just didn't feel right to me to use a detachable mag. I was still limited to 5 rounds anyways, but I found it just much more satisfying to plop in that stripper clip, push down the rounds, and let the charging handle fly. There is a sentimentalism there in me thinking this is how some guy way back when loaded this thing and it was a certain affinity with the past which allowed me to be content for it being what it is. I have since sold the ATI stock and the detachable mag.

Thats a good post there mr gazelle.
I reflect back on the years I have owned sks rifles. I really don't shoot mine much these days but will always have them.
For me, the first sks I was introduced to had 30 round detacheable mags. It was of course an SKS-D
In the store down at Lever Arms in Vancouver when old man Lever still sat behind his "desk" , I didn't even consider a fixed mag model.
I didn't know then, the things I know now about the history of the D models. We just liked them, they were cheap, the ammo was even cheaper and it was a royal hoot heading out to crown land and blastin away to our hearts content. It wasn't until early 2000's that I actually bought my first fixed mag model , a chinese rifle a friend was selling. It might even be the only fixed mag model I ever owned LOL It was a good rifle and fairly accurate as sks's go but it got sold here in the EE some years ago now.
Perhaps if the D models had never existed I might have never owned an sks at all so it explains my attachment/preference for the actual D models I started out with. Might also explain why I don't have the issues some folks claim the D's have. The magazine changes just feel natural to me.... knock the empty out and rock the full one in..... kinda like the m14.
anyways , my comments for the day LOL

I purchased my Sks because I wanted a Centerfire range toy. Was torn between an SKS And a PCC in 9mm of some sort.

In the end the traditional wood and steel of the SKS and the fact that it had an internal magazine meaning I didn’t need to buy and store any more different mags won out for me. I have plenty of rifles (mostly rimfire) that use mags and half my range bag it seems is filled with the various magazines. The charm of not needing any MAGS, having stripper clips that take next to no room, cost Pennies and additionally allow loading nearly as quick as a mag it’s perfect as a range toy. In a fighting rifle I can see mags being obviously superior but for a range toy I love stripper clips and see no real benefit to the mags. I think another benefit to stripper clips and colder climates is I find loading stripper clips with gloves on much easier than loading magazines.

I am very happy with my choice. My only complaint with the SKS is my vision and iron sights don’t work well at 100 yards (got my self some prescription shooting glasses and going try some tech sights). But at the 25 yard this rifles a blast and easily one of my favorite plinkers.

I hear ya about the eyesight, though you are in a better boat than me, with even taking it to 100 yards. I stick to 25 yards since my eyesight is pretty bad at my age.

It's funny you mention iron sights. On my first SKS, I (wrongly) assumed my point of aim vs point of impact was off because the gun was as old as my Dad, and most of his parts aren't working properly. It wasn't until I got some basic familiarity with the sights that I realized I can adjust that front post. Or could I? Turns out that it was already moved all the way it could to one side. So clearly the previous owners had this issue as well and adjusted the sights as far as the could go (and it was still off). It wasn't until I bought my next one that I realized they are not all like that but by then it didn't matter since then the bottleneck was my poor eyesight, beyond 50 yard distances. I suppose there is some advantage here of putting the original one under different modernized / sporterized furniture that allowed a scope to be put on it, but by then my affinity for keeping the whole thing stock overrode any desire to make it more contemporarily functional.
