I have never done much with ducks they have always been the birds swimming along the shore while fishing but its getting more and more temptings .

Looking for info on what kinds we have in ontario pictures would be helpful, what ducks are good or bad, whats a prized sought after duck and similar info

Okay I'll bite to start things off. H'mmm,.... You breed Labs, you live in Timmins and your asking very basic questions on ducks. Your either joking with us or you lead a sheltered life and your labs just play with tennis balls and never hunt. With all do respect because I don't mean to be a disrespectful but this just doesn't sound right.

Quite probably the most prized and sought after, not to mention the hardest duck to bag, is the Great Horny Duck. They come to bugles, and the sound of scrapping trees. My information could be sketchy not much of a duck hunter myself.

No, Ardent, you are exactly correct. But counter intuitively the hen Greater Horny duck has a deep booming voice and renders a very duck-like quack... while the drakes of the species have a high pitched, whistling bugle... always end the bugle with a high pitch and rising intonation... makes the ducks... well... very "horny." OP since your labs are only accustomed to tennis balls use caution when sending them to retrieve drake Greater Horny ducks... as they have spurs on each leg that would put a tom turkey to shame...

Good luck.

IMO, the Black Duck, also known as "The Black", is a prized duck. They are very weary and cautious when approaching decoys. They fly high in the day, and don't land in decoys until the last minute of shooting light. One of the best eating ducks is the Canvasback. Back during Great Depression (1930's) when commercial duck hunting was active, the canvasback cost between 25 to 50 cents more because of their better taste and plumpness. I also enjoy the species that wear jewelry..........

I shoot many species as I have the luxury of puddle and river duck hunting... avoid fish ducks and shoot the rest..

Based on my personal hunting method and the beauty of the bird, I covet male wood ducks.... have one mounted just because..... but really, they all go quack... or splash as it were....

Ducks and geese are all about first and last light..... getting them in the morning when they take off and at last light as they land to raft for the night..... puddle ducks can be jump hunted in small swamps etc.....pretty much all day long....

If using a motor, the motor must be shut-off and all forward movement ceased BEFORE loading your firearm...
