School of ducks

Not a trophy per se..... In fact, I harvested it by accident, not even supposed to be present in our area..... It's a Harlequin Duck...... Had it mounted since I certainly wasn't going to eat it and it was too pretty to waste....

Are those clams at the bottom of the mount? Is that what a Harlequin duck eats? Great piece!

Those are mollusks... and yes, apparently what a Harlequin eats.... which makes it a fish duck (unedible).... I had a merganzer once and I would describe the taste as "tangy"...... lol

Mollusks or molluscs are the family that includes clams and other invertebrates. Mussels and clams are common molluscs, but there are thousands of different varieties.

A small river defines the southern border of my back yard. It's usually only shin deep, so a pair of waders is all I need, although I do have a 10' jon boat nearby if I'm so inclined. I toss out 5 or 6 decoys and wait for the sun to come up, making some light calls to let everyone know where I am. Then it's wood duck mayhem for about 18 minutes. There could be a water-polo match going on and it wouldn't matter one lick.

I have a similar spot, but I wear waders and walk alongside the creek and jump shoot them...... always fun when they start coming from all angles.... most of the time they are dumb enough to fly directly down the creek.... lol

If using a motor, the motor must be shut-off and all forward movement ceased BEFORE loading your firearm...
Unfortunaey doing that when trying to recover a cripple in open water usually equates to a lost bird. I like to refer to the rule to make every reasonable and necessary effort in attempt to retreive a wounded animal. Sometimes that means Jane and Finch driveby shooting style!!

And here I thought the brace of Fat Mallards was a sweet picture .. and then I found this one.
Man those woodies and yellow hulls make my heart beat faster.
As for the school of ducks, never heard of them in school..maybe a raft of them a flock or two, but a school for ducks??
Nope, can not say that I have.
Get yer gun, boots lic. and calls and get out there and give it a whirl, you might be thunderstruck by the beating of wings as they race overhead at 60mph.

Shot in Ontario??? Was it harvested in recent years?

That was about 6 years ago.... (give or take a year)..... wasn't even in fast water, jumped it while hunting puddle ducks.....

I am about an hour east of you...

Its a beauty, but I certainly wouldn't be posting it on the net. Legal or not, it is a bone of contention to some, as there is no season in most of Ontario (and AFAIK, hasn't been for a long while). A particularly Aholeish CO could come to your door...

Stranger things have happened, and its just my opinion, blah blah blah.

Actually, I did report it as an accidental harvest..... Most decent taxidermists won't touch a bird for mount without the reporting being done..... I have an osprey mounted as well that had fallen ill in the creek near my old cottage (Chemical spill) and the process to get it done was exactly the same....
