Brian: Welcome to the half moon club. I've read the first two and last two pages so not sure if I'm repeating what's been said. . First off, I have a Bushnell Banner 3-9x40 on one of my pre-64 Winchesters and found the eye relief easy and comfortable at 4". . The width of your 4 fingers of your hand is close to 4", on the average, and a good measure when you mount the gun by placing your hand between the ocular lense and your face. . From your pictures it appears the scope is mounted way too far to the rear.
When I first position a scope on my rifles I slide the scope back until the end of the ocular lense is the same distance back as the rear of the tang. .A good starting position.
If you're mounting the gun too high and looking down on the scope, on a quick shot, the ocular lense can sometime bite you as well. . I have a Swarovski , 30 mm scope, that has a shock absorbing ocular lense. It moves in about 1/2" when I push it.
