Scope bit twice today:) what scope has best eye relief?

If I push the scope further ahead ( towards the muzzle) I have to lean further ahead to get a full eye box .

Here how it sits now. All the way back on the mount and I still have to lean ahead about an inch to get a full eye box . If I go for a perfect cheek weld , the eye box closes up. So if I move the scope ahead towards the muzzle , I have to lean further ahead.

Take a photo of the scope sitting on the rifle. Maybe I've been hanging around my kids to much today but I'm having a helluva time picturing what you're trying to describe.

I'm sure the scope I had on today had at least 3 1/2 eye relief and I could feel that sucker kissing my forehead numerous times . I'm thinking 4 1/2 would be nice . Will a muzzle brake reduce rearward travel?

3-1/2" of eye relief is plenty. Either your scope is mounted wrong, or your shooting form is poor, or both. Reading your posts, I am thinking both.

This is as far back as I can mount this. I still have to lean about one inch to get a full eye box . If I don't move my head one inch forward and keep a perfect cheek weld , I get a small view through the scope( it closes up?). So even if I could move my scope back 1 inch further , closer to my eye to get the perfect combination of cheek weld and eye box view, it would be too close , thereby causing scope bite. For me.

I think I had to turn the mount around ( backwards maybe?) to get it to work.

Oh yeah, absolutely. The mount is backwards. No way should it be that far back. Turn it around and remount the scope.. How's your rifle to shoulder fit? With the scope and mount set up properly, you should be able to shoulder your rifle and have the scope in perfect alignment with your eye at a proper relief without needing to adjust your grip or shoulder set. Let us know how it works out. You should notice a tremendous difference.

I'm not sure of technique, all I can say is , I had the rifle firmly pressed into my shoulder and my shoulder was firm. I've fired 7 mm before and 300 magnum and never got hit with the scope. I just measured and have 2 1/4 of eye relief. Maybe this combination of short eye relief and having to lean over , caused this.

I have never seen a scope mounted that far backwards before..... As a general rule of thumb, the adjustment turrets should be just about centred over the action for a traditional mount..... It amazes me you were even able to shoulder the rifle in that configuration, let alone fire it.....

Your optic is about 3" too far back and mounted too high. On my 7mm mag my Leupold occular bell ends 1" after the rear of the trigger guard (I'm 6'2" tall).

I have a T3 in 338wm. My Leupold V2 gives me 3.5 inches to my eye from the rear objective, never been hit by the scope. Just looked at my set up, my rear objective is an inch forward of yours in the picture, my obj lines up with the forward edge of the middle patch of stippling on the wrist of the stock. Your ring set up looks really high but maybe thats what works on your HB, I have Talleys on mine.

Is the stock possibly a bit too long for you, causing you to have to crawl up on the scope? I know I've had that issue before because I'm short. (5'5")

As for a good scope with decent eye relief, I'd seriously look into a leupold VX-3 in a 3.5-10 or 4.5-14 if you want a bit more magnification. I have a 1.75-6 leupold on a 416 Rigby that doesn't smack me. Not yet anyway...

Might want to try some traditional rings instead of that mount. As is, its waaay too far back (and backwards) and appears to be higher than necessary. That mount appears to be for an AR which would be similar to Extra High rings. You could likely get away with Medium rings unless the objective bell is really large.

View attachment 46899Here's a pic with a lower set of rings, it does give me a better cheek weld. But I still can't get the scope back far enough to be comfortable . Even on 3 power I have to lean my head forward to get the full eye box view. A 3 1/2 eye relief would work perfect as she sits now. But as stated the scope is too far back. I'm 5 11 and have long arms, it's almost as if the stock is too long.

In order for me to get the turrets in line with the centre of the action, I would need about a 5 inch eye relief.

I can move the mount back one more notch and this helps but it will bring the scope back further.
