Scope for NR Semi-Auto for Coyotes

Anything but Vortex.

Especially at that price point.

Find a used Leupold.

I have several vortex scopes at the price point and never had a cause to complain. You can certainly do a lot worse.

That said there is a Leupold Mark AR MOD 1 on the EE for under 500. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a used Leupold.

Out of several Vortex scopes from cheap to expensive the two that I have had fail were both mid range Viper PST's. They were promptly replaced and the replacements have not failed.

I have a Leupold VX-6HD that has issues with the illumination. I have not sent it in yet to test Leupold's warranty service because I'm using the rifle too much right now to be without it and I don't really use the illumination anyways.

Every scope company puts out a dud from time to time. There is no guarantee that "X" brand will be any better than "Y" brand.

I always thought those looked pretty slick, does anyone have any experience or know if they're decent? It's been too close to the $500 mark for me to justify experimenting with it.

I have a 1-8 Primary Arms with ACSS. I love that reticle.

I like the scope and it does well for the price. I once read somewhere that Primary Arms and Vortex were made in the same factory but on different lines. I have several Vortex`s (as well as Sightrons, Trijicons etc) and I could believe that.

Make sure you consider the whole package. My 1-8 Trijicon is my current favourite but it is a tank - super heavy.

I am looking for advice on putting a scope on a NR black rifle. I am specifically using this for hunting coyotes.
We call coyotes in Alberta and most set ups are 300 yards or less.

You have to weigh the options & variables, and decide what you're willing to sacrifice due to budget restraints.
What's most important to you ? Tracking, reticle, glass/clarity, controls, warranty, etc.
And most of my stands cover a lot more ground than 300 yds, that's about as closest shot I get (*minus some lucky close-ups).

*I did shoot one today at barely 100 meters...

And if you're even contemplating taking further shots that 300 yds, loosen the purse-strings and spend more on a quality scope.
Honestly, if it's just for sub-300 yard shots, a $250 Bushnell Engage will get the job done.
I run a Viper HS-T 6-24x 50mm on my .223 bolt-gun, had a Sightron same spec but the parallax was too hard to turn when cold.

YMMV

Nikon is still my go to optic. Simply excellent for the price u pay!

But u honestly cant really go wrong with most stuff from Vortex, Burris, Redfield, Leopald and Primary Arms.

I have a Strike Eagle 1-6x24 on my JR Carbine .... its an excellent 150m and under coyote optic.

I have a 4-12x42 Nikon p223 on my MR1, and its great for most ranges.

Imo key characteristics i look for in a hunting optic is:

Non exposed turrets (or at least stiff slippery ones if they are)

Illuminated reticle, helps greatly for morning and dusk hunting

A simple reticle design

An etched reticle so u are not reliant on batteries.

I run a viper pst 5x25 on my bcl102 and so far it has been reliable and for the price its surprisingly clear. I shot some fclass with the rifle and it tracked perfect out to 500m and back to zero.

Maybe the gen 3. I had a gen 2 and it was not great. Glass a bit better than a strike eagle, but the reticle was not crisp and illumination was not great in the day.

Got the G3 and thought the reticle looked fine to me. Havent spent that much time with the ACCS but some far Im liking it. Thought it would work great for this application.

One scope that i like is the Burris E1 4.5-14X42. Great range of magnification, great reticule, side focus. Thats what i have on my yot rifle.

Great choice, though if you might have some close in fast shots, 4.5x might be a little high.

Leupold. Burris. Sig. Primary Arms. Are all top choices.
