Determine the longest shot you're ever likely to make, and choose the upper magnification that allows you to see your target, under all light conditions. Determine the shortest range you might ever shoot at, and choose the lower magnification based on having sufficient field of view. Chances are you'll end up with a 1.5-5x, a 1.75-6X, a 2-7X or a 2.5-8X.

You know what I mean, though. If that distance from eye to eyepiece doesn't work, there are no options except the front extension ring.
Also, we could be talking about a different brand of gun. Model 70 long action, for example.
I've had them on a few different rifles without a problem but I'm sure one could find a rifle that it's a problem. If the 2.5-8 didn't work for some reason, I would still find another option than the 1.5-5x20 though.
