I have a Marlin GBL(1895) and a longer than normal eye relief scope. What I need is an extended or longer scope ring base to allow me to mount the scope further ahead. Anyone know of one I can use that is longer but will still allow me to utilize the open sights if needed? Make, model and or source of supply? Will greatly appreciate any suggestions and help.

Johnn, are you sure you want to be able to still see the iron sights?
See through mounts with a scope on top is to me a monstrosity, not suitable for either the iron sights or the scope, in my opinion.
In my junk box I have one or two sets of see through rings you are welcome to. I think one is for Weaver type bases, while the other is an odd ball.
One step better is the hinging type of swing out of the way mounts. I may have a set of them, if I haven't thrown them out.
Regarding the Marlin bases, there are at least three different lengths that all fit the same four screw holes of the Marlin. However, I don't think they would help out your eye relief. I had three lengths, used one on my new 45-70, but the setting for the rear ring was the same distance behind the screw holes on all three lengths. It was just the front that was extended.
A lower fixed can save you as much as nearly an inch, over a multi power. I have a K3 on my 44 magnum, which I consider about ideal. If I would have had another one, or a K2.5, or a 2.5x Bushnell Scope Chief, it would have gone on my 45-70.
I have a K4 on my Marlin 35 Remington and I don't think it sticks back any further than the K3.

Hi Bruce. Guess I was a little vague in my need explaination. The access to the open sights I had in mind would be by removing the rings from the base and the line of site to the open sights wuold be looking above that base the rings had been attached to. On the 1895GS I had that I gave my son and my 444S, I used a set of the Weaver Pivot mounts I believe you've mentioned. However, with this Marlin GBL in .45-70 I recently picked up, the scope that came with it is a long eye relief Hi-Lux2-7x32.

Can you see what I'm getting at from the photo Bruce? What I'd like to try and get, if at all possible, is a longer base that extends right up to the back of the back rear open sight. I'd like a base that would allow me to move the scope ahead about 3". The scope would be used most of the time , but if I did happen to need or want to use the open sights, I could detach the rings from the base and I'm good to go. I know the 'see through' mounts you've mentioned and I've used a set once years ago and ;)would prefer to not go that route again. All I want to do really is move the scope position forward with a different base, if possible. The base and rings the gun came with are more or less standard for a scope with a normal length eye relief.

The older Weaver base was a bit longer, maybe an inch?
Weaver only makes what you have on your ker-pow.
Gun shows and rewt through the bins might be a way to find the older ones.
Or find a longer base that fits the length and have it drilled out to your spaces?

As I said in my post, I had three different lengths of bases (top drawer.) However, all three mounted the scope the same, that is, the distance from the rear screw hole to the groove for the rear mount, was the same. I used the long one because the base protruding forward would give extra strength to the scope.
If one used the longest base, then cut a new groove for the rear ring, you could probably gain an inch or so of eye relief.

The rail that comes standard on the SBL 1895 replaces the rear sight, but it also incorporates a rear aperture sight. You could mount that scope as far forward as you want, and as low as you want, and then simply remove it as you suggest. I'm pretty sure that XS Sights sells that rail separately. I have my SBL set up like that, actually with two different scopes in QD rings, and it's easy to switch back and forth as desired.

Before you make any decision, I would suggest you play around with that scope to see where it needs to sit to give you the sight picture you want. I have 2 of that model (I like scout rifles!:)) and for me, going only three inches further forward than you have it now still wouldn't be enough. I want mine placed with the eyepiece somewhere around the front of the receiver.

Thanks guy.:d After a quick look, an XS Lever Rail with rear sight definately looks like it would fit with what I'm looking for. Oh, is there a Canadian outlet for XS Sight products that you're aware of?? Thanks again,:), much appreciated.

I don't know who imports or sells them, but somebody must...I've picked up several at gun shows over the years. Here's a shot of the SBL with that rail, as well as an 1894 with a different XS rail, one that doesn't incorporate the rear peep and which I would never buy again! The scope on the SBL is as far back as it can go, and since the photo I have moved it further forward because it makes the gun carry much better, allowing your hand to wrap right around the receiver, behind the scope.

That would definately fit the bill. Got a spare;) you'd like to part with? I've sent P&d in Edmonton an inquiry to see if they handle them. They're a site sponsor and I usually stop in for a 'shopping' trip whenever I'm visiting relatives in the area. However, if you have one of those rails and rear sight assemblies available, please give me a shout. Once again, thanks for all your help and info.

UPDATE:
Just received a reply back from Dianne @ P&d and they don't handle XS products.
