Scope on Canadian C7`s

Elcan C79 or C79A2 = Crap
The biggest problem is that the adjustments are on the mount, not in the sight. I don’t know of any other optic that has the adjustments on the mount, that’s probably for a reason.

The 1st generation ELCAN's as previously said leave a lot to be desired. Climb on the Herc, rifle zeroed, climb off the Herc, zeroing is your guess. It didn't travel well. At first and last light it has good light gathering capabilities. I always found that when on "jungle lane" ranges my time was a lot longer with the ELCAN, than with iron sights, but then I'm just an old fart with preferences.

Personally with my background shooting service condition matches years ago, I'd rather use iron sights. That said my personal AR has a Bushnell Red Dot on it because now I only use it for 3 gun matches where the furthest target is 100 meters away.

The addition of the elcan to the C7 brought the level of general marksmanship in the forces up several notches. That said the A1 mount is sheit. The optic is good but the mount leaves a lot to be desired. The A2 mount is better and holds a zero pretty well. Some people hate the whole thing and to each his own.Personally it has served me well.

I wonder how many of the people expressing opinions have had a lot of experience using them? Sure they are a little old fashioned compared to some stuff today, but I like the large field of view and light gathering capabilities giving you some useful low light viewing potential. Downside is that its a bit bulky and the threads on the mounting screws can strip if over tightened.
Compared to things like the AUG and L85 I would give the Elcan a good passing grade

Nothing wrong with the C79 series Elcan scopes. Much better than trying to find iron sights in the dark. Hell of a lot better than aiming down the barrel gangsta style.

Compared to the equivalent generation of ACOG the ELCAN has better glass and a more effective reticle.
However the mounting method, and eternal adjustments ensure the zero will not hold.

At the time the C7 was the best thoughout and executed Infantry Small Arm issued worldwide.

The vast amount of people who love the ELCAN do so due to its glass, and don't have enough experience with better setups on the market.

I still feel that the vast majority of soldiers are better suited with a T-1 Aimpoint.

My experiences with the Elcan were that it really paid to check the screws on the underside of the mount, as wel as the integrity of the windage and elevation mech's, every time you went to the range with it. And regularly thereafter.

I liked shooting with it. Rather have a long glass scope though.

Perfect? Nope. Better than what was used before, and still room for improvement.

In my opinion.

Could have left the sights off and saved the weight, for all I ever had to use it on deployment.

Cheers
